typing in symbols and not text

I opened a new adobe acrobat reader DC document today and I am only able to type in symbols. Normal text is not working. How do I fix this?

There's usually not much that can be done about this in Reader, but how are you entering the text, exactly?

Are you using one of the commenting tools, or are you typing it into a text field? And can you share the file with us?
