Unable to combine word and PDF file

Recently upgraded to new computer.  No when I try to combine 2 separate files, one that requires conversion first (word doc) with a already converted file (.pdf), the Combine process tries to save to an actual file rather than a .tmp file to continue the combine process.  I can't see where this is set to change it.
