Question

Unable to edit headers & footers. I get the message header & footers cannot be detected. Any solution?

After the last set of Acrobat updates, I cannot edit headers & footers. I can add them to a document, but even if I try to edit them immediately after they are added, I get the message "Header & footers cannot be detected." Any solution?

It is a simple problem as I have described it. The files are created with AutoCAD, MathCAD, spreadsheets, Woodworks, etc. It just cropped up on 01/26.  I can delete the headers/footers and re-add them. But, it is a pain & the software should work.

    Hello All,

I hope you are doing well.

Could you please install the latest build of Acrobat and see if this issue still occurs: 25.001.21288 Planned update, Mar 10, 2026.

If the issue persists, could you please provide a quick screen recording while replicating the issue, along with a test file? This will assist the product team in continuing their investigation.

    Regards,

    Anand Sri.

The issue is with an existing file.  To provide a test file, I created a new PDF from Word docs and added a footer.  That ‘test’ file allowed me to edit the footers.  But, in the ‘real’ PDF file I am still unable to update footers.  Not sure why there is a difference.

I know this is already being looked into and investigated but, I wanted to throw my hat into the ring and say, I am also having this issue and all my users who use Adobe.

Has there been any resolution?  A month is a long time for this problem to continue, especially because Acrobat is not recognizing footers that were literally just added using Acrobat. Is there a fix or workaround at this time?

    Hello,

I am also experiencing the same problem. When I create a header and/or footer (“Edit” > “Modify PDF File” > “Header and Footer” > “Add...”) on a .pdf file, which I validate, and then want to modify it again (“Edit” > “Modify PDF File” > “Header and Footer” > “Update...”), the following error appears:

“Adobe Acrobat cannot find any headers or footers in this file. If header or footer information is visible, it has not been added in Adobe Acrobat and therefore cannot be detected.”

Error when modifying a header and/or footer

Even when no processing or action has been performed after creating a header and/or footer. I can only delete it to add a new one because creating or modifying it via the “Add header and footer” action overwrites the new header and/or footer.

My operating system is Windows 11 and my version of Adobe Acrobat Pro DC is: 2025.001.21184.

Thank you and have a nice day.

    Still getting the Header/Footer error:
Adobe Acrobat cannot find any headers or footers in this file. If you see header or footer information, it was not added in Adobe Acrobat and cannot be detected as such.”

I’m having the same problem. Completely unacceptable that we have to pay for a product and still do Adobe’s beta testing for them.

    Hi @Jezza01

Hope you are doing well and thanks for reaching out. We are sorry for the trouble.

To help the team investigate and narrow down the root cause, could you please share a bit more detail?

A few quick questions to help us troubleshoot:

    • Which operating system and version are you on? (e.g., Windows 10/11 with build number, or macOS version)
    • Does this happen with all PDFs from those apps, or only specific files/templates?

If possible, could you also share:

    • A short screen recording (video) showing the issue (before/after adding headers/footers)
    • A sample file (if it doesn’t contain sensitive data) where the problem consistently reproduces

These details and recordings are very helpful for our engineering team to reproduce the issue and work on a fix. Thanks for flagging this and for your patience so far.

    Same Issue here

Same issue here - combining several PDFs into one, then adding a header and footer

The header/footer cannot be updated, as it says it can’t detect a header or footer to change

Problem just started for me in version 2025.001-21151 (64 bit), but as often as this program updates, the problem might have commenced in an earlier version.
