Hi everybody.

I am having the same problem on Windows 10, with Acrobat 2020 and MS office 2019.

I have all headings typed in sentence case and changed to small caps or all-caps from the heading style settings. Office native "save as PDF" does render the bookmarks in sentence case, whereas Adobe export to PDF does show them in all caps. I open both pdf documents with adobe to look at them. What can I do? It is driving me crazy. Thanks!

Part of the answer is which software is used to view the PDF.

But there are 2 other factors:

  1. How the content was typed and formatted in the original source document, and
  2. How the PDF was exported (or saved as) from the source document, both the conversion settings and the utility that was used.

The screen caps below show a comparison of how the original Word file was typed and formatted, vs. how it appears in the PDF and the PDF bookmarks. In the analysis, separate the actual content from its rendering or appearance.

When exported from Word to PDF with the Adobe PDF Maker ribbon tab, the bookmarks appear in the case as they were typed, not how they were formatted. Same when using the MS Word "Save As / PDF" utility.

And that's correct.

Content first: visual formatting (including caps vs lower case) is secondary.

"CAT" are different glyphs/characters than "cat" and all software programs should respect those independent glyphs as the content migrates from one program/technology to the next.

  • From Word to PDF.
  • From PDF to a screen reader.
  • Doesn't matter: the same glyphs should be retained and presented.

So to find out what's causing the difference in your documents, look at the source document and how it was formatted. Use Word's Style Inspector and Reveal Formatting tools to drill down to the nitty gritty of the file.

Comment: I would NOT want to see bookmarks in ALL CAPS. Extremely difficult to read and skim for important items. Testing on user behavior has shown an 80% increase in reading errors when text is in ALL CAPS.  I don't want to see headings in ALL CAPS, either!

This should not be happening. What software to you use and the client use? Can you share screenshots from you both?
