Question

Verify compliance with PDF/x-4

When Preflighting for PDF/x-4 compliance using Acrobat version 17.120, we are getting errors that we don't get in Acrobat 15.200. The same exact file processed in the later version of Acrobat generates the following errors: DeviceN color does not have colorant entry for all spot colors and Separation color representations for special colors are inconsistent. We have seen this with multiple files on multiple work stations. Any ideas why?

Thanks for reporting the issue and sharing the file.

Shared file is not compliant with PDF/X-4.  Issues reported by newer version of Acrobat are correct.

1. DeviceN does not have colorant entry for all spot colors

While such colorant entries are optional in PDF, they are required in PDF/X-4. That these entries are indeed missing. It can be analysed  using Preflight's "Browse internal PDF structure" view.

2. Separation color representations for special colors are inconsistent

For all spot colors in a PDF/X-4 file their alternative representation needs to be identical. This is not the case here with the shared file.

Let us know if you have any concerns.

Priyanka

So, in other words, the newest version of Acrobat will catch these issues, where as the older versions of Acrobat may not. Correct?

We have gotten the customer's file and are following up on it with our preflight team …

First of all, as we update Acrobat, we do attempt to improve and refine Acrobat Preflight and thus, if we previously weren't catching a legitimate problem, we update the profiles to catch those problems. That is good (at least for most of our customers).

That having been said, to ascertain that you aren't encountering a “false positive” error message, we would need to see a sample file. Please post such a file such that we can look at it here at Adobe. (If you feel uncomfortable publicly posting such a file, please send me a private message on the forums with the link; we will maintain full confidentiality here at Adobe!) We also would need to know exactly how the PDF/X-4 file was created.
