We are a Law firm and print a lot of state and federal forms that have a bar code at the bottom of them. We are now unable to print these forms (we now have Adobe Acrobat reader DC) It is imperative to have these forms for our business.

Sorry but either I'm not communicating properly or I'm missing something.

Are you using Apple's Preview application?

What I'm not understanding is that Preview is a separate application not related to Acrobat at all. So your statement that it wants you to update Acrobat doesn't make any sense to me.

Please humor me and open your document using Preview to open the document and then try to print from Preview. If you still get a message to update Acrobat, please take a screenshot and post that.

Thanks,

Gary, the message comes from the PDF file, not the application. This happens e.g. with PDF Portfolios or XFA (LiveCycle Designer) forms that require Adobe Acrobat/Reader of at least a certain version. Even in a non-Adobe application, it will instruct you to update your Adobe Acrobat/Reader application.

Because the problem is with barcodes, this is either a problem related to XFA forms, or extended Reader Rights - neither of which will work in Preview, hence the message.

Donald, what exactly happens when you try to print from Adobe Reader?

Question moved to proper forum.

Hi Donalds

Need a bit more information please: What is your OS and how were you able to print these before (e.g., what software were you using when you could print)?

Mac OS High Sierra 10.13.4 and we were using and older version of adobe I am unsure as of now. We do not have the option of downgrading either in the install process either.

This may sound silly but have you tried using Apple's Preview to do the printing?

FWIW, every once in a while (admittedly rarely) I encounter documents that Adobe will not print. I've talked with Adobe and they blame either my printer (HP Laserjet 1320) or the creator of the PDF*.

*Not all PDFs are the same. A number of years ago Adobe released the control of PDF to the ISO organization. They now set standards. Adobe states that they adhere to these standards tightly and claim that not everyone else does. If the offending PDF and/or the Printer have not done their job right, the document may not print. Amusingly Preview is more tolerant for errors in structure and may print the document just fine. Adobe says that why should they spend their man hours getting their software to work with mistakes that others make? While I do understand their logic, it is still a PIA

If Preview works, I think this falls into the category: do what works.

Please let us know what happens.
