Question

website/email links in pdf not working properly

Just printed a pdf file from word 2010. None of the links are working. When highlighting, the text is treated as blocks rather then lines. Link regain functionality for a moment after being highlighted in this strange manner. Creating a pdf directly through word eliminates this problem. Any ideas on why this is happening?

Thanks,

Alice

Hey I'm sure you probably got this fixed. But I was having this same issue. Saving as PDF was not making my links clickable. Saving the document as a web page and then saving it as a PDF did make the links clickable but then the formatting was all off.

I found the solution on another site.

Instead of "saving" as PDF, instead EXPORT as PDF.

File->Export->Create PDF/XPS Document

That worked for me. Hope it helps.

thanks for all the explanations - it's still a bit strange that out of no where adobe did not recognize a single/link or e-mail address, where previously I have never had that problem.

Thanks,

Alice

When I looked at your PDF in AA8 (I did not try my AA9), I saw the links, but had no link capability. It may do with the settings I have in Acrobat. So you might want to look for the same option in your version. There is a setting under the General preferences that asks to create links from general URLs. Mine is checked, but I still do not see the links in your PDF. I can add a link and they show up. Anyway, that is just to let you know what I found. It may be that I have to close the PDF and reopen to get the links active. The link I had added in text (not as an actual link), did show up when I closed and reopened. The link I added had http:// added to the link of your text. It may be that is what is missing for your work. Basically, it is not a URL without the http part.

You might also be a bit careful about using spaces in your file names that you use. They downloaded in my browser as %20 to give a proper URL link. This bit of using spaces is not a standard URL and has been an outgrowth of MS sloppy approach to HTML. If you want the space, I suggest you change the space to an under bar "_". That is just a bit of observation and not an issue with the link question. Hope I helped some.

I've already tried what you suggested... hasn't helped. I have http:// in two of the original addresses - it doesn't seem to make a difference. E-mail link isn't working either, though there should be no problem recognizing that as a link. Again, this is the first time I have had this problem and in other documents all links (http:// or not, email or web) seem to work just fine.

Thanks for the help though,

Alice

In Word use Convert to Adobe PDF.

I did that, I'm curious about why it doesn't work when printing to PDF. I've been having issued with the new version of Adobe ever since it was installed. I can come with workarounds, just prefer to fix the problem at the source.

Printing to Adobe PDF doesn't create links in the PDF documents.

Got a sample PDF that is posted somewhere that demonstrates the behavior?
