Question

When combining PDF's I get a message saying that the PDF is too large to save

I am using Acrobat Pro DC and am using the Combine PDF tool to combine about 10 PDF files. A message comes up saying that the PDF file is too large to save. I am confused because I have more than enough available space to save the file.

Does your system have enough RAM memory available?

  • Try quitting out of Acrobat and also Restarting your computer, then ONLY launching Adobe Acrobat and performing the task after a clean system start. (don't launch any other applications you might normally run such as Outlook etc. this is to ensure you don't use up too much RAM).

Also try copying the 10 files to your local computer if they happen to be on a server presently.

I really don't think so!

Both Windows and MacOS X are virtual memory operating systems. Unlike the old MacOS 9 and earlier, programs are not limited to the amount of physical memory either in total or currently committed by the operating system and applications. Thus, it is not an issue of available RAM!

What probably happened is that the OP ran into internal Acrobat limits. Perhaps, combining the files in multiple stages would work.

you are right VM is used now days.  Could VM size restriction be an issue in that case?

I think the work-around:

  • E.g. combining files in small badges will hopefully fix the immediate issue.

It would be interesting to know the individual file sizes of the 10 PDFs that are being combined. (maybe something to forward to Acrobat  team to work on in that case to allow for less chances of running into internal Acrobat limits?)
