When converting to PDF, transparent images turn grey

Here is what the image looks like in Word:

Here is what the image looks like when converted to PDF:

I have checked the "Print background colors and images" box in Word; using a Mac. I have been doing this for years and it has only just become a problem. It is not an issue with the particular document, I have tested it with a variety of documents using transparent images.
