My suspicion is that you have conflicts between English and Hebrew versions of Acrobat, possibly with other Adobe applications as well.

If you go to your Preferences dialog box, On the PC you get there with the Edit>Preferences… menu command; on the Mac, you access that same pull down menu command through the Acrobat pull-down menu. There is one areas you want to check to ensure which language you’re using with the program.

    • Select to the Language dialog from the left side list of Categories: in the Preferences dialog box. In the Application Language: options box, the default is Same as the operating system. That’s convenient, but as you already know, occasionally fraught with peril. Switch it to English (US) and you should be past your problem … again. You can switch back to English (Hebrew characters I cannot reproduce here), or dedicated Hebrew if that’s the version of Acrobat you possess, when you want to edit Hebrew.
    • Switching the language to the one you want to use here is the best way to get Acrobat to respond in the language you want to use. Relying on a default will occasionally result in you getting rude surprises you do not want … again. The computer has no idea of what you want it to do, only to respond the way it has been programmed.
    • If that frustrates you, you need to tell it how you want it to respond. The first bullet point is where you can tell it how to respond to you.

Copy this response down and keep it handy. It will keep you from getting frustrated and being insulting about the “horrible system” you’re using to get help for fixing your problem … again.

Thanks.  The horribleness of the system is the making it impossible to actually get to a human….   your suggestion worked!  thank you so much.  I didn;t have a specific language option to choose so switched to Same as operating system, which seems to have worked… Many thanks again.  looks like the problem was never properly fixed.  I have done nothing with Arabic for more than 10 years (and then only received documents. I don’t understand why it was trying to support it!

I’m glad that my advice worked for you. Please keep this information handy. It’ll hopefully keep the frustration down to manageable levels.

    Good luck,

The work around did not work.   The system was up to date already, no updating needed

    Hi @MichaelGamlen1 ,

Thank you for the additional details and trying the work around. We appreciate you confirming that this occurs with all PDFs while English input works correctly in other applications. Let’s try the following:

    • Launch Acrobat.
    • Menu > Preferences > Language
    • Try unchecking ligatures, Hindi Digits, and enabling writing direction switching.
    • If you are using a semantic language, such as Hindi or Asian languages, you may have to enable it again.
    •  Click Ok.
    • Relaunch Acrobat and try again.

If the issue still persist, please help us with collect the logs from the affected machine and share them with us along with the log ID? To collect the logs, please refer to this article: https://adobe.ly/4eZgLHP

I am trying to change a date, so I select the insertion point, backspace over the old numbers, and type the new numbers.  These appear in Hebrew.   I have had this problem repeatedly over the last 2-3 years and a technician has connected to my system and sorted it out. One thing they had to do was switch off the new interface.  This is when the problem started and they said it was known bug.

It happens with all documents. English works fine everywhere else.  Its the current version of acrobat updated automatically and W11 Pro

    I will try the workaround

    Hi @MichaelGamlen1,

Thank you for reaching out. I understand how disruptive it can be when Hebrew characters appear while you’re editing English text in Acrobat Pro.

To help us understand the workflow, please let us know:

    • Does this occur when editing existing text, adding new text, or both?
    • Is the same result seen with all PDFs or only certain documents?
    • Does English work correctly in other applications on the same computer?
    • Which Acrobat Pro and operating system versions are currently in use?
    • If possible, share a short screen recording showing the text-editing workflow.

In the meantime, you may try the following workaround suggested below:

    1. Open the PDF in Acrobat Pro and select Edit.
    2. Click the affected text and check the selected font in the formatting panel.
    3. To review the default font used when adding text, go to Menu > Preferences > Content Editing > Font Options, select an English-compatible font, save the changes, and restart Acrobat. Set default fonts in Acrobat on desktop | Adobe Acrobat
    4. Check for updates under Menu > Help > Check for Updates, install any available update, and restart the computer.

We hope this helps. Let us know if you need any assistance.

    Regards,

    ^PV
