Hi All,

Recently, when we scan documents from the printer, the generated PDF file shows an error message when opened in Adobe Acrobat Reader. However, the same PDF opens without any issues in Microsoft Edge and Google Chrome.

We have verified the printer’s scanning settings and did not find any issues there. Based on our observations, we suspect that this may be related to Adobe Acrobat Reader rather than the printer itself.

For reference, we have attached the error message/document encountered in Adobe Acrobat Reader. Please advise on the cause of this issue and how we can resolve it.

Thank you.

Hi there,

Hope you are doing well, and thank you for sharing the details and for attaching the error message—that really helps.

If the scanned PDF opens fine in Microsoft Edge and Google Chrome but shows an error in Adobe Acrobat Reader, it usually means the PDF was created in a way that doesn’t fully follow PDF standards. Web browsers are more forgiving and can open such files, whereas Acrobat Reader is stricter and may flag structural issues.

Here are a few things you can try:

1. Update Adobe Acrobat Reader
Make sure you’re using the latest version of the Acrobat application. Updates often include fixes for file-handling issues. Go to Help > Check for updates and reboot the computer once.

2. Try “Save a Copy” or “Print to PDF” in Acrobat

  • Open the file in a browser (Edge or Chrome).
  • Choose Print and select Microsoft Print to PDF.
  • Open the newly created PDF in Acrobat Reader and check if the error is gone.

3. Optimize or Repair the PDF
Go to File > Save as Other > Optimized PDF, under the font tab, check for any unembedded fonts.

You may also try File > Save As to rewrite the file structure.

Check the scanner/driver firmware
Even if the settings look fine, outdated scanner firmware or drivers can sometimes generate non-compliant PDFs. Updating them often resolves this behavior.

Additionally, please go through the help page https://adobe.ly/4qHtvqG and see if that works.
