When printing pdf that was Preflight Converted to B/W, Images print as Black Boxes

Hello. I have a customer who sends me a pdf created by Word 2007 each month and I am trying to get their file printed properly without having to mess with it each time. I use a digital press (Konica C3070L) when printing the newsletter and am trying to make sure that each one prints in B & W instead of CMYK to minimize costs for the customer.

I have attached a copy of their original pdf along with my version of it setup for running on the press. Also I have attached a copy of the B&W Preflight conversion of my press file. All of the images look fine on the screen, but when I go into the Print Dialog, the preview window (on the B&W file) shows several of the images as black boxes instead (and that is the way they print). If I goto Advanced Print Setup and change the Output Color to Separations, then the images in preview (and print) all look fine, but if I use the Default Output Color of Composite, I get black boxes...  While it is possible to use the Separations method, this is an added step that is likely to be overlooked in future months.

Suggestions?

Your BW file works fine for me.

I'm curious as to why you are doing all this work when your Konica can impose the file in booklet form (enlarging the pages as desired) and print in greyscale, all in your print dialog box. Yes, it seems the pages in the client PDF are in reverse order, but you can easily reorder them in Acrobat.

While I realize that I can reorder the pages and impose it as booklet, we have only had this machine for a few months and most of my process is from when we had our previous printer.

Unfortunately when I print the color file in Greyscale, the Konica runs it as a CMYK job instead of Black only. This defeats the purpose of trying to run it as a Black only job.

I am working on a Mac OSX 10.13.6, I don't know if that is causing part of the issue or not... Unfortunately my Mac doesn't support any newer version of OS.

Also, I just reread my response and realized I wasn't very clear... when I run the job (or afaik any color file) as Greyscale, the Konica uses CMYK to make the greyscale print instead of just using K. Do I possibly have something setup incorrectly for my printer instead of it being an Acrobat issue?

For clarity, the steps I take with the file each time are:

1: Open customer file in Acrobat Pro DC

2: Goto Print Production/ Edit Object

3: Copy one page of customer content to clipboard

4: Paste content into last month's 11 x 17 "Press" file

5: Continue thru other 3 pages

6: Open Preflight

7: Activate the predefined fixup Digital Printing B/W

8: Print the resulting pdf
