Question

We tried uninstalling and reinstall, repair, copying the agm.dll file from a working envirement. But nothing seems to work. We even used an old version of adobe but when the users login again the issue is still there.

I believe we found a temporary fix until Adobe figures out the solution.

    • uninstall Adobe Reader
    • make sure the registry keys mentioned below about stopping the update and created.
    • reinstall Adobe Reader 22931
    • open services and DISABLE the Adobe update service
    • you will notice the file path of the update executable. find that path and RENAME all the files in that folder. I put OLD in front of them. This will help STOP the auto update from running.

    • We did this but forgot about DATTO running auto updates for us. Once we STOPPED the auto update in Datto on that version and server, we have not had an update happen.

Not saying this will work for ALL of you but we were able to continue working and our users could print from the servers.  Good Luck!!!

Thank you, we were pulling our hair out trying to find why it was updating. Datto was betraying us =)

Task Scheduler has an ‘Adobe Acrobat Update Task’ that I disabled today.  It was set to run upon user logon and 10am daily.

We are having the issue too. We have tried all the fixes below and even tried renaming the amsvc.exe file so Adobe updater couldn’t find it but SOMEHOW it still updated. We have tried turning OFF the update service in SERVICES but it restarts itself. We have disabled the service and it re-enables itself. We need a solid resolution.

    Hello @jennifer_0546

I hope you are doing well, and sorry for the trouble.

Is it Acrobat Reader 32-bit or 64- bit causing the issue? Can you please check this from Menu > Help > About Adobe Acrobat, and share the screenshot of the app details window?

    Thanks,

    Anand Sri.

    Hi CPCTechnischeDienst and bytelok_9721,

Please confirm if the issue occurs with Acrobat Reader 32 bit versionor 64 bit. Also, if it is only occurs with Acrobat Reader.

We look forward to your response.

    Thanks,

    Meenakshi

This is our current working version, when it updates it starts getting the error.

    Hi @Anand Sri Bhattacharya,

We have multiple sites affected by this with RD servers running Server 2016 Datacentre fully patched. Everything I have done to try and prevent Adobe from updating from 24.x to 26 has been unsuccessful. Until Tuesday, we had been able to prevent updated to Adobe but now, no matter what, the updates get through within 20 minutes.

As our clients use the unified installer to account for users licensed for Pro and users who only require Reader, no one can open a PDF. Do you have an ETA for a resolution to this critical issue?

    Thanks,

    Stephen

    Hi @Anand Sri Bhattacharya,

I ran diagnostics on 2 of the servers affected and uploaded the logs. After the crash, one of the servers tries to get Adobe to start in by first disabling Protected Mode due to an incompatibility as seen in the screenshot. No matter the choice, it continues in a loop until you click cancel.

Not sure if this was mentioned, but the error messages continue in the administrator console session on the server if anyone tries to open Adobe.

    Thanks,

    Stephen

We are seeing the same issue on Windows Server 2016 (version 1607, build 14393.9514) with Acrobat Reader 26.002.21996: Acrobat.exe fails on startup with "Entry Point Not Found - The procedure entry point SetThreadDescription could not be located in the dynamic link library C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat DC\Acrobat\AGM.dll".

    Workaround that worked for us:
    - Uninstall Acrobat Reader
    - Install Reader 26.002.21931 from the Reader distribution page (OS: Windows Server 2016, version 21931 is currently offered there as "Recommended")
    - Verified afterwards: Acrobat.exe ProductVersion = 26.2.21931.0, and the error is gone

Adobe's enterprise documentation describes a policy value to turn off the updater.
We are setting this on our servers:

    Acrobat Reader:
    HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Adobe\Acrobat Reader\DC\FeatureLockdown
    bUpdater (DWORD) = 0

    Acrobat Pro/Standard:
    HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Adobe\Adobe Acrobat\DC\FeatureLockdown
    bUpdater (DWORD) = 0

Same here, on RDS 2016 does not work on latest version. Reverted yesterday but it autoupdated.

Fix is to rollback to older version and disable updates via Services.msc and
    “””””
    reg add "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Adobe\Adobe Acrobat\DC\FeatureLockDown" /v bUpdater /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f
    ”””””
    Just to be sure.

Please ensure you have the latest version of Acrobat installed on the machine: Win: 26.002.21996, Mac: 26.002.22008, , This version is causing the issue.

    Hello,

We are also experiencing this issue on all our Windows Server 2016 machines (version 1607, build 14393.9514) running Acrobat Reader 26.002.21996. All our servers are fully up to date. Rolling back to the previous version (26.002.21931) resolves the problem, but automatic updates cannot be disabled—disabling the "Adobe Acrobat Update Service" does not work.

Here are the error messages we get in the Event Viewer:

    • "Application Message: Acrobat.exe - Entry Point Not Found: The procedure entry point SetThreadDescription could not be located in the dynamic link library C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat DC\Acrobat\AGM.dll."

    • "Application Message: Windows - Entry Point Not Found: Exception Processing Message 0xc0000139 - Unexpected parameters"

    Thanks for your help!
