I am a beta tester, using Apple Mojave, and are unable to use Acrobat XI  11.0.23. Acrobat opens, and crashes immediately

We assume that by Apple Mojave you really mean MacOS 10.14 which at this point is not released as a product, but only for those who wish to assist Apple with testing.

(1)     For supported products, Adobe issues updates to deal with operating system application incompatibilities either in conjunction with the official release of the underlying operating system.

(2)     Acrobat 11 is no longer supported by Adobe and thus, no new updates to address OS compatibility issues or functionality are being issued. As a “beta tester” for Apple, it may be helpful to advise Apple of the apparent new incompatibility that you found. The variable is obviously changes that Apple made.

(3)     It is a very unfortunate fact of life that unlike in previous generations of operating system development in which compatibility with existing applications was requirement assumed by the operating system developer, current operating system developers, especially Apple and unfortunately increasing Microsoft, do not consider compatibility with existing applications and especially older versions of existing applications to be a priority. In fact, Apple is very public about deprecating existing operating system APIs and services (for example, eliminating support for QuickTime and 32-bit applications).

(4)     Due to (3) above, it is virtually impossible to provide OS compatibility updates for older software versions in many cases.

The bottom line is that with “modern” computers and operating systems, you almost need to assume that a new computer and/or an upgrade to a new operating system version may require application upgrades as well.

FWIW, one of the advantages of the subscription model for software is that the latest version of and updates to the applications are available for you to install and run without having to explicitly buy upgrades to older versions. That having been said, it is probably prudent in a production environment not to be the first kid on the block to install the “latest and greatest” OS version upgrades, but to wait until the dust settles, both in terms of the inevitable OS patches and application updates to deal with the OS compatibility issues, to install that shiny new OS version.
