Why aren't my fields adding up?

I am trying to total fields in an expense report and I cannot figure out why it's not working.

It' won't add the fields together with either method: 'Value is the sum (+) of the following fields:' or with 'Simplified Field Notation'.

What am I doing wrong? Screenshots attached.
