Why does Acrobat sometimes increase PDF file size after editing?

I've noticed that some PDFs become significantly larger after making only minor edits in Acrobat, such as updating text or adding comments.

Is this expected behavior, and are there any recommended settings to keep file sizes smaller without affecting document quality?
