Why does Adobe Acrobat make large PDF files slow even on a powerful PC?

Hope you are doing well and thanks for reaching out. We are sorry for the trouble you are experiencing. 

• We need some more informaiton for a better understanding:

• Are you on an IT-managed work computer or a personal computer?

• Are these files stored on a shared network? If yes, please download the files to your computer locally and try again. 

• Have you started experiencing this issue recently after an update, or was it occurring earlier as well? 

• What is the version of the Acrobat Application and the OS (Win/Mac) you are using? Go to Help > About Acrobat and make sure the application is updated on the latest version 26.001.21691 Planned update, Jun 25, 2026 go to Help > Check for updates and reboot the computer once.

Also, try the steps below and see if that works:

• Switch to "Page layout" view instead of "Continuous"
  Continuous scroll mode keeps multiple pages rendered in memory at once, which hammers performance on long documents. Try switching to single-page view: View > Page Display > Single Page View . Navigation becomes smoother because Acrobat only renders the current page.

• Uncheck ‘Use page Cache’
  Go to Preferences (Ctrl,Cmd+K) > Page Display and Uncheck ‘Use Page Cache’ and reboot the application.

• Disable Enhanced Security temporarily (for local files)
  Enhanced Security adds overhead for every page load. For files you trust on your own machine, you can whitelist your local folders: go to Preferences (Ctrl,Cmd+K) > Security (Enhanced) and add your working folder to the Privileged Locations list.
