Why does it take so long to open a PDF with Acrobat DC?

I've noticed that it is taking longer & longer for DC to open PDFs. And the files are not big. It just seems that DC must be doing something behind the scene causing it to take so long. I've seen comments on other boards about this, but no one knows what is causing it (or, more importantly, how to stop it).  Is there some setting or goofy option I can disable to make DC open PDFs faster like it used to?
