Question

Why is Adobe crashing upon saving and DELETING files

In more than one instance I have attempted saving PDF files to which adobe freezes. The only choice is to close the program eventually. The file is deleted.

There are multiple other questions at least as old as 2023 from my brief search. The answers push the blame to the user and expect additional work and ultimately no possibility of file recovery. It is absolutely unacceptable to delete files regardless of the user. This issues needs to be resolved by Adobe across the board.

    Hello @calm_intuitionfa22

I hope you are doing well, and thanks for reaching out. Sorry for the trouble you had.

Could you please share more details about the issue/workflow?

    1. Which Acrobat/Reader version and build are you using (Menu > Help > About Adobe Acrobat)?

    2. Which operating system and version are you using: Windows or macOS?

    3. Where are the affected PDFs stored: A) local drive, B) OneDrive/SharePoint, C) network drive, or D) another cloud-synced location?

    4. Does the file disappear when using Save, Save As, or both, and is the original PDF deleted or only the newly saved/modified copy missing?

    5. Can you reproduce this with multiple PDFs, including a newly created local PDF, or only with specific files?

Please ensure you have the latest version of Acrobat installed on the machine: 26.002.21901, Planned update, Sep 08, 2026. Check for any pending updates by navigating to Menu > Help> Check for Updates. Install the updates, restart the app and the machine, and try again.

Windows only: In Acrobat, select Menu > Help > Repair installation, complete the repair, and restart Windows.

Check for Autosave recovery: Relaunch Acrobat or reopen the affected PDF. If Acrobat offers an autosaved file, select Yes, then save the recovered document immediately. For future protection, verify that Menu > Preferences > Documents > Automatically Save Document Changes To Temporary File Every xx Minutes is enabled. Please note that there are no other options to recover the file in the Acrobat recovery method if no autosaved file is offered.

Ensure that you have all the mandatory and optional updates of the OS installed.

Please let us know how it goes, and reach out if you need any assistance.

    Regards,

    Anand Sri.
