Question

Windows Explorer preview pane not displaying previews of PDFs

I am unable to view previews of adobe PDF documents in the preview pane in Windows Explorer on my computer (i.e. local drive or network drive) unless it is via my OneDrive folder.

When trying to view files on WE that are on local or network drives, the preview plane is blank and contains no error message or warning.

I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling adobe and my IT department have tried various fixes such as deleting temporary files, editing the registry, and editing local adobe acrobat settings. None of these fixes have worked.

I too have this issue; in general, preview pane just no longer works for ANY file type.

When something isn’t working, it’s probably Adobe’s fault. It’s present on both of PCs where I made the unfortunate decision to install Acrobat. Uninstalling does not work either; It’s a shame that you have to wipe your PC in order to undo the total mess Adobe software makes.

Hi @Aaron23474416pdgc

Hope you are doing well and thanks for reaching out. We are sorry for the trouble.

Have you started experiencing this issue recently after an update? What is the version of the Acrobat Application and the OS you are using? Go to Help > About Acrobat and make sure its updated to the latest version  26.001.21691 Planned update, Jun 25, 2026 Go to Help > Check for updates and reboot the computer once.

One detail is worth digging into: you mentioned preview pane has stopped working for all file types, not just PDFs. That's actually a useful clue, because it points away from the Acrobat PDF Shell Extension specifically and toward something at the Windows Explorer/shell level the PDF handler is what's usually installed by Acrobat, but it can't be causing every file type to fail to preview.

A few things that would help narrow it down:

  1. Confirm scope: does this happen in every folder, on both local and network drives.
  2. Try a clean local user profile or a new Windows user account temporarily, if previews work there, it points to a corrupted profile/registry setting rather than the Acrobat install itself.

if uninstalling Acrobat entirely didn't bring previews back for any file type, that's actually evidence the root cause isn't Acrobat, since removing it should have removed its shell extension along with any interference it was causing.

Hope this helps.

Hi @graham_6561

Thanks for reaching out, and sorry to hear you’re experiencing issues with PDF previews in Windows Explorer.

This issue is typically related to the PDF Shell Extension, which Acrobat uses to generate thumbnail and preview pane content in File Explorer.

Please try the following steps:

1. Repair or Reinstall the Shell Extension

  • Open Acrobat.

  • Go to Help > Repair Installation (Windows only).

  • After repair, restart your system and check if previews return.

2. Ensure Preview Handler is Enabled

  • Open Adobe Acrobat.

  • Go to Edit > Preferences > General.

  • Ensure “Enable PDF thumbnail previews in Windows Explorer” is checked.

  • Click OK and restart your computer.

3. Verify Default App Settings

  • Go to Windows Settings > Apps > Default Apps.

  • Ensure Adobe Acrobat (or Acrobat Reader) is set as the default app for opening PDFs.

4. Check Windows Preview Pane Settings

  • Open a File Explorer window.

  • Go to the View tab and ensure “Preview pane” is enabled.

  • Also, verify the preview works with other file types to rule out a system-level issue.

If the issue still persists, please let us know:

  • Your version of Windows (e.g., Windows 11 23H2),

  • Your version of Acrobat or Acrobat Reader, and

  • Whether you recently installed or updated either application.

We’ll be happy to assist you further.

Did you ever find a fix for this?  Very frustrating.
