Word Count in Adobe PRO (creative cloud version)

I desparately need a word count for my PDF.  Unfortunately when I try to copy or export to Word, I get gibberish (similar to what you get when you print with 'rely only on printer fonts' turned on.  It is not turned on when I print but when exporting I can't seem to make that selection.

 

I have looked at document properties and it shows me the page count, but not the word count.  Since I can't get it into Word (I also tried exporting to RTF with the same result)  I am not sure how to proceed.  I have attached a copy of the exported Word gibberish. (well I tried to attach the file but even though it was on 7.5 MB it wouldn't upload).  I can send a copy if desired.

 

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

    Note that the results might be different from what you get in Word for the same file, though.
