Question

Words separated with automatic/discretionary hyphens are read as two words

Hello Adobe Community.

I have recently been working on making an InDesign Document accessible. I have been following Chad Chelius' course on Lynda.com and overall the result has been pretty good, I have run into one problem though. The InDesign document uses automatic hyphens to split a word if it does not fit in the text box but for some reason when I export this to PDF both Jaws and NVDA read the hyphenated words as two separate words.

What I find weird is that if i mark the word in the PDF and copy it to Word or Notepad then the word show up unbroken and without the hyphen.

So my question is, am I exporting/formatting the text wrong or are discretionary just not supported by Jaws and NVDA?

Any feedback is greatly appreciated.
