I can't add captions

I am used to adding captions to my photo's. This morning that was-not possible anymore. When I type a caption in the caption box it disappears when trying to save it to the image file. This is a nuissance for me, because I use this discription to find files on certain topics in my 35.000 pictures library. What could have happened and what can I do to solve this problem?
