I do not know how they do it but today the VLC icon is wearing Santa's hat.

Maybe a brainstorm for Adobe engineers?

No hack and no update required.

I guess that they just have to embed this icon into the software as any icon, and program the software to use it a few days around Christmas instead of the "normal" icon.

That makes sense to me, as I haven't updated VLC and I get that icon.

they hack your system files without asking | telling you... the sad part is how easy most people make it for them

Not a hack... all you have to do is allow the program to check for updates when started
