Santa Fe jury reaches $375 million verdict against social media giant Meta

The jury found Meta which owns Facebook, Instagram & What’s App engaged in both “unfair and deceptive trade practices” and “unconscionable trade practices.”

As soon as the ink dries, I’m sure Meta will file an appeal.

There’s also a torrent of other lawsuits in Meta’s future. This story is just getting started.

Meta to cut 8,000 jobs (10% of its workforce) starting in May, with more layoffs expected in the second half of the year. In total, about 15,000 people will lose their jobs.

The bloodbath is unfolding as Zuckerberg shifts more resources toward the development of AI. Meta, which is scrambling to keep pace with rivals like Anthropic and OpenAI, has teed up $135 billion in capital spending this year alone.

I’m of the opinion that social media giants should give 20% of their gross profits to K-12 public schools and after school programs.

Australia now has a law that anyone under 16 years of age may not be on social media… and the providers must verify a user’s age or be fined… I think the US should do that

YouTube & Meta lost a landmark ‘Social Media Addiction’ case

Wednesday, Los Angeles, CA  a jury found that the social media platforms intentionally designed their apps to be addictive to teens and didn’t warn users about potential risks.

Snap & TikTok, also named in the suit, settled for an undisclosed amount before the trial began.

The jury awarded the plaintiff $3 million in damages. Meta is liable for 70% and Google must pay 30%. This verdict will likely have far-reaching implications in thousands of other similar lawsuits.

Pew Research data shows that more than half of American teens use Instagram & YouTube daily.
