Oh Omicron!

Despite precautions of masking and using hand sanitizers wherever we go, my husband and I have succumbed to the omicron variant.  Fortunately we are fully vaxxed and boosted.  But even with immunity, this bug is no fun!

Symptoms started with an assault of the upper airway but no sore throat, followed by headache, body aches, fever, chills, loss of appetite and profound fatigue.  Analgesics help.

If you're infected, stay isolated.  Keep warm.  Limit yourself to essential activity.  Drink plenty of water and get plenty of rest.  The worst symptoms ran their course in approximately 48 hours.  Although some fatigue lingers beyond that.

My advice is don't go out unless you have to.  It's not a question of "if" you'll get this, it's a matter of "when" and severity of symptoms.

The healthcare system in my area is overwhelmed.  90% of hospital beds are taken with unvaxxed omicron cases.  That number could sharply increase in the next few days.  Stay safe everyone.

Omicron variant (BA.2) is in 40 countries so far.

New omicron subtype BA.2 is spreading quickly (msn.com)

Wear your N95 mask.  Cloth is not enough protection.

And for heaven's sake, get vaccinated!!

We've GOT to stop this cycle.

My August cruise to Alaska was at a really good time http://www.pacifier.com/~jtsmith/V2021.HTM since I am now reading that all of the cruise ships are having problems due to how fast-easily the current variant spreads

And now there is a pill to help when you have the virus

I wonder how much the Pfizer (Paxlovid) pills will end up costing individuals.  Early estimates were $500-700 per 5-day course of treatment.

Last year, my friend had monoclonal antibody infusion from a visiting home care nurse in a hazmat suit.  The antibody was covered by govt subsidy and insurance but the infusion and nurse was an extra expense that wasn't covered by insurance.

According to what I read, you will now have better (but still not 100%) natural protection against the virus than the protection given by any of the different vaccines

Sadly, the US government 'one size fits all' approach of mandating the vaccine and ignoring the better natural protection of those who have had the virus and recovered is forcing recovered people to get the vaccine or, in some cases, be fired from their jobs

Ignoring the science in favor of saying that everyone must be vaccinated is not the right way to go

The first US omicron fatality was a Texas man in his 50's who had contracted and survived COVID -19.

So if "natural immunity" is all it takes to stave off mutations, I'd say fine.  But this has gone way beyond that and is no longer something to sneeze (cough) at.  Numbers don't lie even when politicians do.

I'm not a big fan of mandates either but when human risk outweighs personal choice, you have to ask yourself if you want your neighbors to be vaxxed or not.  Personally I'd prefer it if everyone took the vaccine to stay out of hospitals for want of beds for other critical care patients who need them.  But given the current political climate, that probably won't happen.

So here we are 2 years into COVID with yet another hospital bed shortage, more long-term COVID side-effects if one is lucky or needless fatality when one is not so lucky.  Rolling the dice is not a solution.

Compared to COVID, the free vaccines and boosters are a tiny sacrifice to ensure one's family/friends have some protection from a deadly virus. It's not just sensible to get vaxxed, it's the most responsible thing one can do for everyone around them.

Sorry you caught this Omicron monster! But I'm glad you made it out, unlike so many others. Congratulations.

I only wish my dad would take heed. But he just argues and threatens me needlessly. Its really not fair. His stupid stubbornness puts my mother and I on more perpetual and unneeded anxiety. I pray every night for our protection. And yeah both of us are double vaccinated and have been for several months. Thinking of getting the third jab in the spring.
