Question

Seen Any Good Movies Lately?

Since the pandemic hit, we've stayed away from movie theaters for the most part but we've been streaming plenty. Some were really outstanding; others were just meh!

I thought it might be fun to share our experiences here.

Last night we watched a 2021 black comedy/action/thriller called "Nobody" which was recommended by a friend.  If you don't mind gang violence and high action car chases coupled with good music & offbeat comedy, it's an entertaining ride.  B+

We recently saw "Don't Look Up" which has a stellar cast and great performances but it fell apart in some places.  Still I can't help but feel there's a really good film in there somewhere.  And a hysterical scene after the credits, so don't turn it off prematurely.  B-

So what have you seen lately?

Megafault. A movie so bad, it's good. Starring Brittany Murphy, her last movie before she passed away. Filmed in my hometown. My son picked up the cast at the airport and drove them to their hotel where he worked. He didn't have anything good to say about any of them. The avalanche scene and the snow-capped mountains? Mind you, I live in the Midwest. They even convinced our mayor at the time to have a part in it. The director didn't tell him that the building was going to start shaking, because they wanted him to believe it was a real earthquake.

We just saw "A House of Dynamite" now playing on Netflix.

    IMDb 6.7/10, Rotten Tomatoes 79%

An ICBM missile is launched at the U.S. expected to hit the Chicagoland area in 19 minutes. The race begins to find out who's responsible and how to respond...

I predict audiences will hate the ending. I hated the ending. 'Nuff said.

if you've never (or even if you have) seen " burn after reading", it's a coen bros riot.  i was laughing so hard at the end, i was crying.

the acting (clooney, jk simmons, malkovich, pitt, mcdormand etc) thrown into the coen brothers world is something else.

This Cohen Bros film about bad choices slipped under my radar when it came out.  Based on your suggestion, I went searching for it.  "Burn After Reading" isn't "O Brother, Where Art Thou," but it made me laugh.

Went to see Jurassic World Rebirth yesterday... I gave it a 7 score at IMDB

Different characters, but the same basic story in every one of the movies... arrogance and greed leads to doing something that shouldn't be done... and then that greed, and some carelessness, leads to the dinosaur's eating people (some good and some bad people) before the 'hero or heroine' wins through at the end

This one had some interesting characters, but was typical of the entire series... 2+ hours of action that was sometimes fun and sometimes cringeworthy

Just saw Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story on HBO Max.

Personal stories interspersed with archival footage as told by close friends & family who knew the man, the actor and a champion for regenerative nerve treatments. Enthusiastic thumbs up. 👍 👍👍

Heretic (2024) with Hugh Grant, Sophie Thatcher and Chloe East.  👍 👍

Two young Mormon missionaries knock on the wrong door. Part faith-test & part thriller set inside a blueberry pie mousetrap with many doors but no clear exit. I was thoroughly entertained by Hugh Grant's Mr. Reed until the end, when it got a bit too gruesome. Nevertheless, it held my interest.

    Rotten Tomatoes: 91% approval.

    "Mountainhead" HBO/MAX movie 👎👎

A decent premise that failed to deliver. Not worth 1 hour, 48 min of my time.

Four self-absorbed tech bro pals re-unite at a mountain-top lodge as global economic chaos unleashes below them. No likable characters. No redeeming script. Don't waste your time.

I've seen "Emilia Pérez" 4 times and I still never grow tired of it.

It's a ground-breaking movie that makes some people uncomfortable. You either LOVE it or HATE it, there's no in-between.

IMO, it's the most original & thought-provoking film of the last decade. A++

    Spanish, French, English speaking.

Just saw Everything Everywhere All At Once, written & directed by Dan Kwan and Daniel Scheinert.  Available now on Showtime.  Comedy/Adventure, Sci-Fi, Fantasy.

A highly imaginative trip through the multi-verse by a Chinese American woman and laundromat owner (Michelle Yeoh) being audited by IRS tax agent (Jamie Lee Curtis).  Great visuals.  You'll never think about googly eyes, fingers and bagels quite the same way again.  Sadly, the 2nd third of the film lost my interest but the final third is really amazing!  B+

Great picks, Nancy! I also watched Nobody recently—such an unexpectedly fun and wild ride. Bob Odenkirk absolutely nailed the role!

Recently, I watched The Platform on Netflix. It’s a Spanish thriller that's dark, intense, and really makes you think—highly recommended if you're into psychological dramas.

We just saw the Banshees of Inisherin, written and directed by Irish playwright Martin McDonagh.

    https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/the_banshees_of_inisherin

A slightly gruesome story that takes place on a remote island off the coast of 1920's Ireland.  One day without warning, Pádraic (Colin Farrell) learns his best buddy Colm (Brendan Gleeson) has put an end to their lifelong friendship.  With help from his sister (Kerry Condon) and a troubled young islander (Barry Keoghan), Pádraic sets out to repair the damaged relationship by any means necessary.  Part humor & part horror tale that draws you in with gorgeous scenery and top notch performances. A+

I expect The Banshees of Inisherin to receive a few Golden Globe awards this Tues night (5:pm PST).
