Question

Seen Any Good Movies Lately?

Since the pandemic hit, we've stayed away from movie theaters for the most part but we've been streaming plenty. Some were really outstanding; others were just meh!

I thought it might be fun to share our experiences here.

Last night we watched a 2021 black comedy/action/thriller called "Nobody" which was recommended by a friend.  If you don't mind gang violence and high action car chases coupled with good music & offbeat comedy, it's an entertaining ride.  B+

We recently saw "Don't Look Up" which has a stellar cast and great performances but it fell apart in some places.  Still I can't help but feel there's a really good film in there somewhere.  And a hysterical scene after the credits, so don't turn it off prematurely.  B-

So what have you seen lately?

Pressure, 2026 history/war/drama that takes place 72 hours before the infamous D-Day invasion. Running time: 1:40

Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower (Brendan Fraser) desperately needs an accurate weather prediction before committing allied troops to the shores of Normandy. This tense drama is less a war movie & more about character struggles between leaders of the allied forces and two meteorologists (Andrew Scott & Chris Messina) with polar opposite views about weather prediction.

Adapted from a stage play, Pressure’s plot is gripping and intense with a simmering performance by Andrew Scott. I enjoyed this much more than I thought I would.  Highly recommend.

    Rotten Tomatometer 87%, Popcornmeter 95%.

    Available on Peacock & Fandango.

Not a movie, but a nice competition series

Wife and I have been watching ANW https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1587934 which is weekly on NBC and has nothing to do with the historical Ninja Assassins of ancient Japan... but it does make for a 'catchy' name to go with a variable and difficult obstacle course... or, as we call it, watching people fall into water

Something very interesting about ANW is the people competing are also very often helping the other competitors with training and encouragement while they are on the obstacle course... and when someone falls into the water, or just doesn't win, we have never seen a temper tantrum... sometimes a few tears but never a blowup

If you like watching competition shows check your Monday night schedule on NBC

Kodachrome, 2018 comedy/drama, available on Netflix.

A struggling record label exec’s life is turned upside down when he learns his estranged photo-journalist father (Ed Harris) wants to see him. Matt’s father found some old rolls of Kodachrome film he forgot to have developed.  But time’s running out. The last remaining Kodachrome lab is closing soon & Matt must drive his father to Wisconsin. An entertaining if not predictable father-son road-trip elevated by Ed Harris’ colorful performance. Also stars Jason Sudeikis, Elizabeth Olsen & Bruce Greenwood.  73% on Rotten Tomatometer.

We watched Nobody too and had a lot of fun with it. Bob Odenkirk was great in a role you wouldn't normally expect, and the action was surprisingly well done.

Lately, one of my favorites has been Everything Everywhere All at Once, it's weird, funny, emotional, and unlike anything else I've seen in a while. I'd definitely recommend it if you haven't watched it yet.

Not exactly a full movie, but you tube videos with ‘harp twins’

Saw them on a FB reel (which are not always real) and did a search to verify... they are real, and they are married to twin brothers and have lots of videos on you tube

Thinking about seeing The Odyssey in IMAX.  2 hours, 50 minutes. 🤔

Can’t wait to hear Matt Damon’s rendition of “A Man of Constant Sorrow.”

“The Singers” is the 2026 Oscar-winning Short Subject (18 min).

It’s about an impromptu singing contest in a dive bar. The atmosphere is thick and features viral internet talents and first-time actors performing improvised songs. This should be on everyone’s watch list.  A+

Just saw 'Blue Moon,' directed by Richard Linklater. Now playing on Netflix.

Lorenz Hart is skillfully played by Ethan Hawke as the sardonic lyricist who ponders love/friendships & failures at Sardi's bar & grill on opening night of Roger's & Hammerstein's hit musical Oklahoma! (“with an exclamation point.”) 😏

A smartly written script and heartbreaking character study, backdropped by popular tunes from the era like ‘Stardust,’ ‘Blue Moon,’ ‘I get a Kick Out of You,’ and many more...

    Rotten Tomatometer 90%.
