Why did Adobe break my heart by killing FreeHand MX 11.0.2?

40 years of my life include creating art with a remarkable vector drawing program called FreeHand. At the dawn of our brave new digital world, it offered a nimble, intuitive tool for creating artwork in a way that unlocked possibilities I'd never dreamed possible.

Digital artists who are unfamiliar with FreeHand can learn more about it on this Wikipedia page.

I purchased every version of FreeHand — from version 1.0 in 1988 to the final release, version 11.0.2 in 2003. By that time, Adobe had swooped in to buy and kill FreeHand in what I now see as a cynical effort to force artists to buy Adobe's sad copycat, Adobe Illustrator.

Whatever. I'm posting this tale on The Lounge because I couldn't find anywhere else to ask for help.

I managed to keep an ancient Mac running for years, but it eventually died. I bought a newer Mac Mini capable of running the required Mac OS X 10.6.8 and tried my original Macromedia Freehand MX 11.0.2 install CD ROM. No joy.

FreeHand tries to open, but fails. It doesn't seem to like my serial number... the serial number that came with the product I bought in good faith many years ago. I can provide more details upon request.

If you're still reading, thanks. If you have any tips or ideas, thanks.

In digital terms, I'm a dinosaur. A tired old fossil. But as any paleontologist will tell you, we can learn useful stuff from old fossils.

Checking to see if the steps I gave you to install legacy applications helped?

Hello jane-e… thanks for the link; apologies for my slow reply.

Sadly, there’s still no joy. I successfully installed FH MX 11 on the antique Mac Mini with the original install disc I purchased in good faith. Everything seemed fine, but it all fell apart when I entered the serial # that came with it. The FH app bounces a few times in my dock, then dies. As Nancy OShea succinctly pointed out in one of her replies, “MX activation servers shut down in December 2013.” She goes on to say, “It’s impossible to activate legit MX products anymore.”

Sigh… so that’s it, I guess. But maybe not. I still have some cards to play. A longtime pal is a journalist for a major news outlet. I pitched him a story. His editor thinks it has legs.

Meanwhile, I continue work a major update on my website. It’s morphing into a retrospective spanning four decades, viewed by visitors from over 150 countries, and includes artwork made with FreeHand.

A lot of people continue to mourn the loss of FreeHand, even 19 years after it was discontinued.

You can try the steps here for installing legacy apps to see if they will work for you:

    https://helpx.adobe.com/download-install/apps/troubleshoot/licensing-activation-issues/cant-activate-reinstall-legacy-apps.html

You need to have at least one activation available because Adobe does not reset activations.

    Adobe's sad copycat, Adobe Illustrator.

    Not quite:

    • Adobe Illustrator’s initial release date: March 19, 1987.
    • Aldus FreeHand’s initial release date: Fall of 1987.
It was developed by Altsys and licensed to Aldus with Altsys retaining development rights.

Freehand was never part of Adobe Creative Suite. It came in Macromedia MX (2002) and MX Studio (2004).

Sorry Nancy, where did I say that FreeHand was part of CS? I can’t find that…

    I’m pretty sure I said Aldus. 🙂

For more than 25 years, Illustrator has been my vector graphics app of choice.

Adobe didn’t kill Freehand. Customers lost interest in it.

I appreciate your reply, Nancy. I'm glad Illustrator has served your needs for more than 25 years. That means you began using Illustrator some time around 2001, correct? In any case, you probably never had the opportunity to explore or use FreeHand, because it was discontinued by Adobe in 2005, citing "market consolidation" (Adobe already owned Illustrator).

Your reply, "Adobe didn’t kill Freehand. Customers lost interest in it." is puzzling to me. The full story is far more complex.

On April 18, 2005, Adobe announced an agreement to acquire Macromedia (which owned FreeHand at that time) in a stock swap valued at about $3.4 billion. The U.S. Department of Justice regulated the transaction, which came 10 years after the Federal Trade Commission's 1994 ruling which barred Adobe from acquiring FreeHand due to monopolistic concerns.

The killing of FreeHand was not about customers loosing interest. "Market consolidation" is the key concept.

Meanwhile, I'm still looking for help with my original question. I'd like to get FreeHand back up and running on an ancient refurbished Mac Mini which I bought expressly for that purpose.

I had the Macromedia suite of products prior to Adobe’s acquisition in 2005. The only product I cared about was Dreamweaver. The rest of the products fell short of competing products by Corel and Adobe. So I never used them.

As to your quest for Freehand, this is all I could find on the Adobe website, none of which contain links to the app itself which Wikipedia calls obsolete.

Maybe you’ll have better luck on Reddit.
