Adobe Announces OpenType Edition of Font Folio
Monday August 11, 8:12 am ET
New Version Offers the Adobe Type Library in Enhanced Cross-Platform Font Format

SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 11, 2003--Adobe Systems Incorporated (Nasdaq:ADBE - News), the leader in network publishing, today introduced a new version of Adobe® Font Folio(TM) featuring the Adobe Type Library in OpenType® format on one CD-ROM. The Adobe Font Folio (OpenType Edition) product contains more than 2,000 fonts in OpenType format, which allows for richer linguistic support and more advanced typographic control in any print, Web or dynamic media project. Adobe also announced the availability of a new special version with a 10-computer license, making it more affordable for small design shops to access the entire Adobe Type Library.

Adobe and Microsoft Corporation created the OpenType font format to improve cross-platform document portability and simplify font management, by introducing one font file that works on both the Macintosh and Windows platforms. Creative professionals benefit from extended foreign language support and the inclusion of expert typographic glyphs, such as small caps, old style figures and swashes, in many OpenType fonts.

"The OpenType font format is much more convenient than the old Type 1 or TrueType fonts," said David Blatner, co-author of Real World InDesign, InDesign for QuarkXPress Users and Real World Photoshop. "With Adobe's new Font Folio in OpenType format, I love having large character sets in the same font instead of having to work with a whole array of related font files."

Pricing and Availability

The Adobe Font Folio [OpenType Edition] product is available immediately and will be sold primarily through the Adobe store at www.adobe.com, Adobe retail and licensing channels, and includes a standard 20-computer license for US$8,999. License extensions are also available and Font Folio is included in Adobe's transactional and contractual licensing programs. Upgrade pricing from Font Folio versions 8 or 9 to Font Folio OpenType Edition is US$2,499. Adobe is also releasing a special 10-computer license of Font Folio OpenType Edition for smaller design workplaces that is available for US$4,999. International English versions are available where localized versions are not sold.

I use Font Book, which is part of the OS 10.3 operating system, to activate/deactivate fonts, and to organize them into what Font Book calls "collections." I find it every bit as useful as the old ATM. Mac help or someone's OS X book might give you tips on how to use it. It's easy and useful.

I need help installing Font Folio Open Type Edition on OS X 10.3.8. The directions say to put the fonts loose in "Hard Drive - Library - Fonts". When I do that and open Quark all 2,000 fonts are active. That's not what I want. When I move the fonts into a folder that is just loose on my hard drive and then try to add them to Suitcase 11.0.2 so that I can activate them as I need them, they will not add. It looks like they're adding but it still says I have 0 fonts added.

My questions are 1) Are they all supposed to be active when you put them in "Hard Drive - Library - Fonts" as the directions say? Why would you want all 2,000 fonts active at once. It slows everything down. 2) Are these fonts not compatible with Suitcase?

Yes, that's how you install a font.

    >Why would you want all 2,000 fonts active at once.

You probably wouldn't, but some people do like to feel they are
getting their money's worth. However, since Adobe don't make a font
manager they can't really recommend doing anything else...

Thanks, Neil. I'm new to the many, many forums. I'll look there.

    dan,
These characters are not missing at all. But you need to do some homework on this. Several of us responded to your concern in some detail in the Typography forum.

I'm a little out of the thread here, but I thought I might be lucky enough to get in contact with Thomas Phinney this way.

I have found a big problem with OT fonts. In three serif text body fonts included with InDesign CS --- Garamond, Caslon, and Jenson --- the small "barred L" that makes the "w" sound in Polish appears to be missing. It's all the more peculiar when one considers that the capital letter is NOT missing (and it's used a little less often).

Is it ever possible to "update" a font? If so, you should do it. OT would be a wonderful solution to many of my problems IF it had a complete set of characters. Help!

    Dan Pinkerton

PS: I have not done a thorough check to see what else might be missing, though many other Central European characters ARE included.

    Carol,

Also note that you can't clearly separate body (text) fonts from display fonts as at least a decent portion of the text fonts can be used for display. And some cuts of text fonts are targeted for display. Also, some display fonts are marginally readable and can only be used in small doses (such as single words, or initial caps), so long headlines would be out of the question for them.

    Carol,

    There are threads dealing with this in the Adobe Typography forum;

I am considering purchasing Font Folio, and would like more details about what fonts are included. I'd like to know how much of the collection is allocated to body faces, how much to display faces, and so on.
Is there a rough breakdown available?

    dwight,

Your Adobe fonts (such as Jensen) are either purchased on Adobe CDs (and formerly, floppies), downloaded from the Adobe online store, or are bundled with one or more of your Adobe applications. If you upgraded from OS 9.x, they're still on your drive with your other OS 9 stuff, and you can navigate to them.

When I upgraded to OSX somehow I lost some of my adobe fonts (Jensen, etc.) How can I get them from Adobe? Or are they hidden in my Mac? I tried "find"
