Adobe Announces OpenType Edition of Font Folio
Monday August 11, 8:12 am ET
New Version Offers the Adobe Type Library in Enhanced Cross-Platform Font Format

SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 11, 2003--Adobe Systems Incorporated (Nasdaq:ADBE - News), the leader in network publishing, today introduced a new version of Adobe® Font Folio(TM) featuring the Adobe Type Library in OpenType® format on one CD-ROM. The Adobe Font Folio (OpenType Edition) product contains more than 2,000 fonts in OpenType format, which allows for richer linguistic support and more advanced typographic control in any print, Web or dynamic media project. Adobe also announced the availability of a new special version with a 10-computer license, making it more affordable for small design shops to access the entire Adobe Type Library.

Adobe and Microsoft Corporation created the OpenType font format to improve cross-platform document portability and simplify font management, by introducing one font file that works on both the Macintosh and Windows platforms. Creative professionals benefit from extended foreign language support and the inclusion of expert typographic glyphs, such as small caps, old style figures and swashes, in many OpenType fonts.

"The OpenType font format is much more convenient than the old Type 1 or TrueType fonts," said David Blatner, co-author of Real World InDesign, InDesign for QuarkXPress Users and Real World Photoshop. "With Adobe's new Font Folio in OpenType format, I love having large character sets in the same font instead of having to work with a whole array of related font files."

Pricing and Availability

The Adobe Font Folio [OpenType Edition] product is available immediately and will be sold primarily through the Adobe store at www.adobe.com, Adobe retail and licensing channels, and includes a standard 20-computer license for US$8,999. License extensions are also available and Font Folio is included in Adobe's transactional and contractual licensing programs. Upgrade pricing from Font Folio versions 8 or 9 to Font Folio OpenType Edition is US$2,499. Adobe is also releasing a special 10-computer license of Font Folio OpenType Edition for smaller design workplaces that is available for US$4,999. International English versions are available where localized versions are not sold.

Oh ok, I understand. I just bought the unopened Font Folio 9 through eBay at a good price!

    Thank you very much.

Just a note that there's no such thing as "Font Folio 9 OpenType Edition"; there's Font Folio 9, and Font Folio OpenType Edition, and they are two different products.

Font Folio 9 was the last version of Font Folio that had mostly Type 1 fonts (there were a couple of hundred OpenType fonts available at that time). Font Folio OpenType Edition is the next version, and is virtually all OpenType fonts.

    Leigh-Anne,

Although Adobe continues to sell Type 1 fonts at this time, it will not be forever. The writing is on the wall. The future is OpenType.

Also, Adobe DOES continue to sell Type 1 fonts. When you look at Adobe.com's product pages for most OpenType fonts, you will find links down near the lower right side of the page for purchase of the Type 1 version of the same font.

I am a little confused... Does the Font Folio 9.0 OpenType Edition include PostScript T1 as well as OpenType? If not, how can I get the PostScript T1 fonts?

How many service bureaus can use OpenType fonts?

Are the sizes in OpenType fonts a lot different from PostScript T1 which will reflow the text and tracking in desktype publishing programs?

Can I use OpenType fonts in Quark 4, 5 and 6?

    Please clarify my questions.

    Thanks,
    L-A

    Leigh,

I do not believe Adobe is selling Type 1 fonts any longer. Someone
will step in with a correction if I am wrong. You can find information
    about Open Type fonts at:

    http://www.adobe.com/type/opentype/main.html

Open type fonts come in two flavours. Adobe sells the postscript
flavour of Open type fonts. With a modern version of OS 9 running the
most recent version of ATM, most any application that worked with a
postscript font should do fine with the open type fonts, but only part
of the fonts will be available, since most programs running under OS 9
and earlier don't support the full capabilities. I think Indesign 2.02
may be one of the few that do.

Reflow can be a problem with the new fonts are used to replace earlier
ones, but since they names of the fonts are different this will not
happen by accident. Old document will old fonts work fine, replacing
an old font with a newr open type version, requires you to make a
specific substiution and some reflow problems may occur.

As to Quark, you probably won't have any more trouble with Quark than
    you do at present :-)
