Question

text box size alteration

Can anyone help, please? Photoshop has changed the behaviour of the text box, I used to be able to change size seamlessly with good old Command + T. Now, I cannot find a way to make the new, annoying ways to work. If I manage to select the text box and see the handles, only happening while pressing the right button, which is not practical. When I try to reshape, resize, the text size does with it. Etc… I don’t have much time and I’ve already spent two hours on AI platforms to try to figure it out. Thanks!!!

what you are describing and showing in your video is normal behaviour. That is not what’s happening here.

there is really something wrong, including the tiny size of the font, which is not set by me, the only user.

thank you so much, that is so kind of you. Indeed, the second part, the handles showing, is the part that is not happening anymore here. I promise I know how to use it 😊

It looks like nothing has changed in the current version of Photoshop. The demo below was made in Photoshop 27.7.0.

When I try to reshape, resize, the text size does with it.

If you don’t want the text size to change as you resize the text container, first the type layer must be area type, not point type. But in your movie, the layer is point type. In the demo below, at the top you see point type (like yours) at the top, and at the bottom there is area type where you can resize the type container without changing the type size.

You get point type when you create a layer when you simply click with a type tool. Point type is just one line with no container.

You get area type when you create a layer when you drag a rectangle with the type tool. Area type can have multiple lines that rewrap as the size of the type container changes.

So if you want to be able to resize the container without resizing the type inside it, when you create a type layer, drag a type tool, don’t just click. And when you resize, click inside it to enter text editing mode and then drag the handles, because the Free Transform command (Command-T) always scales the type too.

Also notice the difference in the transform rectangle:

When you use Free Transform (which changes the type size), the container border is a solid line.

When the type layer is in text editing mode (which preserves the type size), the container border is a dashed line. So if you don’t want to change the type size make sure you see a dashed line around the type.

Edit the text layer so that the text is highlighted, then you can transform the area type handles without affecting the text size.

Hi @Stephen Marsh Stephen, thank you. That’s what I usually do. My issue, handles are not appearing when doing that, and only briefly and sort of shaking, when I hold command + T. Then, when I try to enlarge, decrease, change shape, the font does with it. It is simply not behaving as usual. I have been using photoshop for sixteen years now, I know how it should behave, unless there’s been a change from Adobe or this is not working. The last time I used text in photoshop was just a few days ago, the simple text, already formatted, you can see in the file, I had no issue at all with that one. I guess I will have to reach out to support. I've been with this for nice hours now...🙄

@tania232241117b1y it’s working as expected for me with Photoshop version 27.7, although we use Ctrl + T for the transform, can you post a screen recording of the issue

Hi @Ged_Traynor Ged_Traynor, thank you so much for taking the time. In the recording you’ll see two things: 1. I am working with a file that was just fine to work with just a couple of days ago. 2. The Command + T doesn’t work and 3. New text is set at a surprisingly small size, one I’ve never used before. I've spent hours trying all the rabbit holes AI has sent me to, which were only dead ends… any idea?

Hi @tania232241117b1y, thanks for reaching out and sharing the video!

Based on what you’ve described and what I can see in the video, this looks like expected behavior.

To reselect the text box and resize the text box, just double click on the text layer icon in the Layers panel.

    Thanks,
