Can't select Auto-Align or Auto-Blend

I have done all of the tutorials to focus stack layers but still cannot get the auto-align or auto-blend options to be "selectable". They keep showing as light gray in my edit toolbar.

After reading other posts, I've made sure to select all layers (3) to align and blend. I'm not using Smart Objects (I don't believe). I've tried stacking all pictures from PS and going from there. I've stacked in LR and opened as layers in PS. I've even done the tutorial through PS (under "learn: work with layers") but even then I get to a roadblock when I have to "place embedded" picture to move forward with the tutorial.

I'm beyond frustrated... please help!

How did you open those layers - there are an awful lot of menu items greyed. Was it from Lightroom by any chance?

If so there is a known issue. To get round it start with both Lightroom and Photoshop closed. Open Photoshop and leave it open. Now open Lightroom and use it to open the images in Photoshop.

Can you show a screenshot including the layers panel, when you try to use Align layers

Sure!! In the layers panel, the three pictures are selected.
