We are running SAP client and Adobe Reader X and Adobe Acrobat X in a Citrix environment. Already working on a DC upgrade. SAP has several functions for printing/viewing PDF documents. Here it makes a call to Acrobat if it is installed. If only Adobe Reader is installed, SAP calls Reader. In both cases, the SAP print/view function works. This means that the licensed Adobe Acrobat is not required. We are trying to lock down Acrobat, using a GPO, so that users cannot run it from Windows Explorer as this is a license violation. We implemented that policy over the weekend and that restriction caused the PDF related functions to fail for the users. So we want to understand what is causing this behavior and then force SAP to always call Reader.
SAP must be using some kind of inter-program communication, either COM or DCOM or DDE or something else or keying on some registry key.
How do we make Reader the default for SAP?
By the way, same happens when opening attached PDF files in Lotus Notes. Both SAP and Notes must be using the same logic.

What happens when you simply double-click a PDF? Does it open in Acrobat or in Reader?
If in Acrobat, then the PDF file extension is associated with it. You can change it in the registry, or by Shift+right-clicking any PDF file, selecting Open With and then specifying Reader as the new default.
If you don't need Acrobat I would recommend uninstalling it, though. Would solve both of your issues at once.

You really have to ask SAP how to do this. It's not possible to guess or analyze what SAP is doing.
