Persistent AdobeArm failure to update

  • February 9, 2012

I have a user that has been getting this irritating error popup from the AdobeARM.exe everytime AdobeReader X (10.1.2) starts up. The error can be delayed for a few seconds until an update check is initiated, but it always fails with the path to the AdobeArm.exe and the error:

"Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropiate permissions to access the item."

User is running Win 7 Pro 64bit. I have uninstalled and manually installed latest Adobe Reader X. ( a few times)

We have Symantec Endpoint Protection running without App protection and I disabled the firewall to see if this might have been blocking the update queries. I have looked into the permissions. I am hoping that someone else has seen this and has an actual fix. Google has so far failed me.

I am open to any suggestions, the latest logs are below.

I think I just fixed this finally and it was a dumb way on Windows 7 x64

    In an elevated Explorer window:

    1. Make the following directory: c:\program files\common files\adobe

    2. Copy the c:\program files (x86)\common files\adobe\ARM folder (and all its subfolders) to c:\program files\Common Files\Adobe

Try launching Reader and choosing "Check for Updates" from the Help menu.  Mine came up with the "Checking for updates" for the first time ever.

For reference here are the logs from Before and After:

I just had the same exact issue with Adobe Reader 11.0.1 on a brand new Windows 7 64-bit machine from HP. I did a reformat prior to finding this solution and that did not fix the problem.

Your fix worked. However, I am unable to reproduce this problem on any other Windows 7 64-bit machine on my network.

Any idea why this might be a problem related to just certain machines? Also, this issue still exists in 11.0.

I'm having the same issue with having automatic updates applied, as a standard user on Windows 7 x64.

I can't get the fix to work.  I'm installing 11.0.00 (to see if it will pick up the 11.0.01 update).  I've set Adobe Reader to automatically download and install updates.  This is a quarterly critical update.

It detects 11.0.01 is available to install in the notification area, and when I click "Install" I get a UAC prompt asking for admin credentials.

Strangely enough, if I run the MSP directly (from C:\ProgramData\Adobe\ARM\Reader_11.0.00\AdbeRdrUpd11001.msp), I don't get any UAC prompt and the patch applies successfully.

This is not ideal, as I need this to be deployed to an organisation where updates can be installed automatically and silently without any user interaction or UAC prompts.  Can anyone shed some light on this?

Could you try and do the following:

    1. Delete the following files from the %temp% location (do take a backup of the AdobeARM.log file first)

        AdobeARM.log

        AdobeARM_NotLocked.log

        ARMUI.ini

    2. Launch Adobe Reader X now, and click on Help > Check for Updates. Do you still see the error?

    3. If you are still seeing the error, try and delete the folder C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Adobe\ARM

Now initiate a repair operation for Adobe Reader from within the Control Panel.

If you are still seeing the error message, please post the contents of the new AdobeARM.log file created.

I'm seeing a similar issue. Windows 7 32. I've done the steps above, here is the new log.

    Hi CardNation,

This is just a part of the log so please provide the full log of the last session. It would be really helpful if you can provide a verbose log instead of simple log.It will help me to understand what is the actual cause of this issue.

Please find below steps to create a verbose log:

    1. Type regedit in Run

    2. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Adobe\Adobe ARM\1.0\ARM\

    3. Create the key iLogLevel (it is a DWORD)

    4. Set iLogLevel as 1.

Paste the log of the last ARM session here.

The log you provided is from Updater session started when AdobeARM.exe was launched from Run registry on User logging.

There are no errors and Updater itself seems to be working fine.

The error is not from Updater - it is from unsuccessful attempt by the Reader application itself to launch Updater.

Most likely there is some kind of missmatch of permissions between Reader and Updater.

Similar issue was reported quite some time ago on this forum, but  as far as I can remember the exact cause of the issue was not found.

Just a hint - Reader (actually Updater.api file) is using ShellExecuteEx API to launch AdobeARM.exe.

Think about possible reasons this API fails.
