Reader DC - High CPU Issue

New Here ,
Mar 01, 2019 Mar 01, 2019

Hello,

Just curious if anyone else has experienced this issue and if they might be able to point me in the right direction.

So, a few months back, Reader DC started being a problem for my users. It seems whenever they open a PDF, there's like a 10-20 second initialization period for Reader DC. You'll see the PDF immediately, and be able to start scrolling through, however, a couple seconds in, it'll freeze and give you the spinning wheel (Win 10 latest build). After 10+ seconds, it'll go away. If you watch Task Manager, you can see AcroRd32.exe's CPU usage  at 20%+. There's nothing else really going on on these workstations. CPU and RAM utilization is perfectly fine on the machine (other than AcroRd32). Disk speed is fine as well (I use all SSDs).

I've tried on older builds of Win 10. I've tried on newer/fresh installs (even brand new, clean workstations with the best hardware). The same issue always comes back eventually. It seems that I can resolve it for at least a little while by either uninstalling/reinstalling, or recreating the user's profile. I can't seem to find a long-term resolution.

For endpoint protection on my workstations, I use Malwarebytes Endpoint Protection. The issue seems the same with or without it enabled. There's nothing else crazy going on on my workstations. It's a pretty vanilla setup.

I've tried going through the steps of disabling all the extra security/protection settings in Reader DC. Doesn't help either.

For now, I've resorted to installing FoxIt Reader for them and just keeping Reader DC around in case there's ever a PDF with compatibility issues. FoxIt is incredibly quick.

Any help is appreciated. Thank you.
