No pdf file was created because Adobe Acrobat encountered an unidentified error.

We have a user using the latest version of Illustrator and Acrobat DC on his Macbook Pro. He is trying to combine images and keeps receiving the error "No pdf file was created  because Adobe Acrobat encountered an unidentified error."

We have uninstalled and reinstalled both Illustrator and Acrobat DC. Re-ran the combine and 9 out of 10 times it fails.

Any suggestions on what to do?

Hi,

You mentioned 9 out 10 times it fails.

Can you provide more details for the 1 out 10 times that seemed to work? Did you wrote down any technical notes of the steps you were following?

Can you please provide operating system and Adobe Acrobat versions that you are using please.

Thank you.

Mac os catalina 10.15.1, running acrobat 2019.021.20049

We followed the exact same steps. Exact same files. Once in a great while they will succeed. Most of the time it will return the generic error. The PNGs were created in Illustrator.

Steps we took to try to combine files:

Open Acrobat Pro

Click File

Click Create

Choose Combine Files

Added image files

Click Combine

Does the same error occur if you merge other image files that are created with another program, like MS Paint, for example.

To rule out if the  Combine Files tool is not working properly, try the sample file from the Adobe help provided here:

https://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/how-to/combine-files-into-pdf.html

Check also for PDF predefined presets that are shared between Illustrator and Acrobat.

Check if creating a custom preset just for those files helps eliminate the error when you combine those image files that were created with Illustrator:

https://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/using/pdf-conversion-settings.html#adobe_pdf_conversion_settings

Aslo refer to this link for a possible resolved issue in which a user worked around the same error by renaming his image files with short filenames:
