Captivate 8 Print Handouts: Fail

  • September 28, 2014

When trying to print, I get an error that says:

"Publish to MS Word failed. Retry after ensuring that

- The document is not open.

- You have installed Microsoft Word"

So... the document is NOT open, and I have an installed, licensed version of Microsoft Word on my computer. What's the problem? Seems to be an issue that many are experiencing based on the chatter - is Adobe putting together a patch/fix for this?

I've spent another day working through the PrintOutput functions without any updated information from Adobe.

From what I saw today, the error message detailed above are generic messages, for errors that could be from the Captivate PrintOutput template, MS Word, or the OS (Windows or Mac).

Today, I was working in a customized template and got the error 12 - 15 times before I came with a version that functioned correctly. It was hanging up on the MultipleChoiceQuestion output and would stop at the first quiz question.

I had nearly started to rebuild the quiz in the working Captivate file when I realized that the Quiz part of my Word PrintOutput template wasn't completely tested.

In the Programs menu, right-click on Adobe Captivate and choose Run as Administrator. Open the Captivate project then save it. Try to publish the handout again. This worked for me today after being on the phone with Adobe support for a few hours yesterday to no avail.

I've had the same problem. Although the first project I tried to print as handouts worked perfectly!

I made a few changes to the project and tried again, but this time I got an error-message about having too many spelling errors in the document (My project is in Danish and I guess the language settings are set to English).. It only did this once and afterwards I got the same error as posted above.

Solution:

I'm guessing it must be a ressource problem on my PC (W7, Office 2010, CP8 version 8.0.1.242) as I've discovered that the error does not come up when I only print portions of the slides.

My project is at 138 slides + 30 or so question pool questions. Here's how it worked for me:

Print handouts without question pool questions: Select only up to 40 or 50 slides to print at a time.

Print handouts with question pool questions: Select only up to 20 slides to print at a time.

Afterwards I copy and paste the Word documents generated  (I renamed the documents to match the slides selected for printing) into one complete document which is then sent to my colleague for translation (the project is to be translated to English).

I know it's a lot of Work, but since this function doesn't work out-of-the-box, creativity sets in :-)

Hope this may help.

I'm having this problem as well. Given the above discussion, I think it must be a bug.

I am also wondering why an Adobe product with "print" and "export" functions can't produce a PDF of the slides.

Publish Captivate to PDF format?

Try that thread? May address your PDF concern, but it will be more a 'project' than a 'handout'...

I agree I think this is a bug. Send in a bug report too - the more Adobe gets on one subject, the more likely that item will be addressed.

Thanks-- even an interactive PDF may be a good start. If I can pull it into Acrobat and export as more or less slides that can print, just as hard copy for students as an option, then I'm good.

Thanks again!

If you're logging into your machine with an Admin-level account then you almost surely have Admin access over Captivate too.

I can't find a spec on MS Office specifically nor Word...but this one for PPT notes 2007 through 2011:

Adobe Captivate Help | Microsoft PowerPoint

So maybe it's an issue with Word 2013?

This one doesn't mention versions, but details the document printing process... maybe something there would help?

This bothered me, so I tried...

The last I needed to print a Handout (any form) in Captivate, I had Office 2010 installed.

Now I have Office 2013 installed.

I opened a recent project and printed a Handout.

It's been sitting on

Publishing Document 10%

for about 4 hours now.

Now, fairly, I have a LOT of stuff open on my computer

It could be a resource issue.

But it makes me suspect more strongly that CP has an issue with Office 2013.

I'd love to hear from anyone else who has 2013 installed if they can print successfully...

Yep same thing happened to me with the 10%. I opened up my Windows Task Manager, and behind the Captivate Window there is a Word window that wants me to Save a document, but when I push Save nothing happens it just sits there. I thought that the workaround you suggested (Saving over the Captivate template, renaming the file as Handout) would solve the problem but nope. My coworker is on Captivate 7 and she was able to generate the handouts for me, so I agree with your theory that the problem is related to Captivate 8 and Office 2013.

Before giving the print command in captivate, you should have a word document already opened. It can even be a blank document. Can you try this and see if it works fine?

I'm having this issue too.

It was working fine for three projects then just started to fail at 50% with same error message as above.

"Publish to MS Word failed. Retry after ensuring that

- The document is not open.

- You have installed Microsoft Word"

Tried Aren's fix. Doesn't work.

Updated to new version of Captivate with 'bug fixes' today.

No Help

Ran office updates for MS office 2011

No fix.

Can somebody from Adobe post a solution please.

Hi Glyn,

Was your problem solved? I ran into the same problem when I tried to publish a "Handout". I am using:

  • Cp7
  • MS Word 2010
  • Windows 7

Hope someone can help?

Thank you!
