Although I have used newer versions of Dreamweaver that are subscription based, I have canceled that service and for a long established client, used the software I had long ago created the site with. That was Dreamweaver MX 2004.
I have never had any issues UNTIL roughly two weeks ago. I can no longer upload files to the server. I checked with the hosting company and there were no changes made on their side. I tested it for my own site which is hosted elsewhere and I am running into the same error message.
Do you think something corrupted in my Dreamweaver software and I have to reinstall it? Or do you think somehow it interfaces with something that would have been on the Macromedia site (even though to my knowledge this all ran off my computer)?
Or do I need to bite the bullet and "rent" the subscription service for Dreamweaver Cloud version? I was trying to avoid passing this cost onto the client or having this monthly expense myself.
Thanks!

The hosting company suggested I try Filezilla. I can see th files on the remote server but I did not try uploading with Filezilla. You think I should try?

Oh, I see you are saying to use Filezilla as an alternative to Dreamweaver in general to avoid the subscription fee and not use an outmoded Dreamweaver. Dreamweaver is easy to design in. I suppose I could design in there (as it lets me still) and then use Filezilla to upload the files. It is worth a try.

It's naive to think that servers are not regularly updated with new & improved security encryption & software. That's what reliable web hosts are paid to do. Meanwhile older software that hasn't received updates in ages suddenly stops working. Personally I would not use MX2004 because the web has changed too much in 14 years.
Use a dedicated FTP client like Filezilla which receives regular updates.
Switch to a modern code editor.

No offense, Nancy, but the OP already stated that he/she "gave up" on the subscription based DW (which, honestly, I cannot blame him/her for). Brackets is a nice alternative, but kind of buggy - especially the way it implements preview testing.
Filezilla is a great FTP, but it's a PITA to have to use a second program for file management, not to mention one _can_ become a bit confused, especially when one is in a rush to get something done. (I have, in fact, accidentally overwritten an hours work with the original files when in a hurry.)
Now, it is true that MX versions of DW are out of date and not up to snuff with the advancing security protocols and whatnot. But I can attest that DW CS5+ does (currently) work with most, if not all, updated host ISP networks. If webnm can get a licensed copy of CS5 or CS6, I think that it should work for a while. Problem is, the OS. I don't know if CS versions, even the latest, will work on Win10 or High Sierra, but it might.
In any case, I do have to agree with your assessment of using an updated IDE. But there are alternatives to Adobe's extortion with subscription based editing. I've heard good things about SublimeText. Don't know if Notepad++ has file management, but it's (IMHO) better than the current DW, of which I have seen many users complain about this or that with.
Just my two cents.

Creative Suite is no longer sold or supported so I can't honestly recommend fishing for a copy that may or may not be legitimate.
CS6 is still available on paid subscription if you check the Preferences box Show Older Apps. It's not offered to Trial Members though.
With respect to running legacy software on the latest wave of 64-bit operating systems, the forums are showing mixed results. Windows users have slightly better results. Mac users *Sierra - Mojave* are advised to keep an older OS on a virtual machine or 2nd computer.
AFAIK, only DW 2018.2 dot release has received updates to support advanced SFTP encryption ciphers.

FlashFXP is good little FTP/SFTP client - reasonable price for a lifetime license/updates/ I've been using it for years and never really used Dreamweaver to upload to remote.
