I've been browsing the web looking for a way to do this, but have come up empty. Does anyone know a way to change the default File/Place location in Illustrator? Right now when I click on File/Place the folder that opens up is the previously used, but ideally it'd open up to the folder where the current working AI file is. Is this possible? Thanks all 🙂

Are you on a Mac or Windows machine? If a Mac, then go to Finder Preferences, click the Advanced icon, then at the bottom under "When performing a search", select "Use the Previous Search Scope". Perhaps that is what you are looking for?

Sorry I should have clarified, I'm running on Windows. Is there a similar option there?

Unfortunately, I only work on Mac, so I'm not familiar enough with the PC side to answer.

Hi Joe,
Thanks for reaching out. If I get it, you want to check while using File > Place feature, if it is possible to change the default location from last used folder to the folder where the current working file is saved? If yes, I am afraid its not possible however it does sound like a helpful feature request. I will pass on your feedback to our Product team and you can do that too by upvoting this request and sharing your comments here:

This is the best way of communicating with the Engineering and Product Management teams regarding issues and suggestions so they can be implemented in future releases.
Let us know if this helps or if you need any further assistance. Thanks!
