Kernel Panic Caused When Using Develop Module and when Exporting Photos - Lightroom Classic

New Here ,
Sep 29, 2019 Sep 29, 2019

I have had my MacBook for a little over a year now, and although heavy editing within Lightroom may cause it to slow down a little, it always gets the job done. Today, it has been giving me constant issues and I am lost for answers.. I'll note everything I've been experiencing with as much detail as possible to try and narrow it down.

- When editing in the Develop Module, sometimes I can edit 5 photos, sometimes 105 before Lightroom crashes unexpectedly. The odd time will cause a kernel panic and restart my computer. The amount of time and editing before crashes occur seems to be completely random.

- When exporting photos is where the biggest issue seems to be. I can successfully get through a couple of photos at a time, but any exports containing 10 or more photos always causes a kernel panic.

- I opened my activity monitor to view while operating Lightroom. Idle status shows CPU% around 6-20%, but as soon as I start exporting it went up as high as 770%.

- I used Disk Utility to run first aid on both my Mac HD as well as my external HD with no errors found. I have also booted in Safe Mode to see if anything changed but everything still crashed while exporting.

- After letting my computer sit closed for a while and then opening up Lightroom and starting again, I can seem to get further in my work before any issues occur, but they still occur.

- I currently am using a HooToo adapter to connect my external drive, as well as a Wacom tablet, if that helps define the issue any more.

- A few months ago my computer was having a similar issue while working in Lightroom and would cause a restart again, I noticed when I clicked to see how much battery power I had left it said "Service Battery" but the message has since disappeared and I have never seen it again. While all this was happening I was working at a music festival where temperatures were very hot and I believed that to be the issue of all the restarts.

- There have been numerous reports sent to Apple, and I copied all the info within one of them. It doesn't say anything about Lightroom or Adobe anywhere so maybe none of this is related to Adobe, however all other activity goes without errors. Here is the info from my latest report:

Hi there,

Sorry for a bad experience with Lightroom, I know that's really frustrating when the app is crashing, Sorry about that,
let us help make it right.

Could you please take a look at the suggestione offered in this similar discussion https://community.adobe.com/t5/Lightroom-Classic/Constant-Kernel-Panic/td-p/9822108 and let us know if that helps?

Thanks,

Akash

I tried turning off the GPU, and I don't have any antivirus software on my Mac. I'm still stuck with the same error. I even tried disconnecting my external HD as well as my tablet so that it is just the MacBook and it's power source, but the problem still persists. If it's a hardware issue it's within the computer and I might have to have it taken in, unfortunately.

To be clear the "Lightroom Application crashes"?

Does the Computer OS also crash??

Both are correct. All other applications seem to work normally, it's just Lightroom that gives me issues. Sometimes Lightroom itself will just close with a prompt to send a report to Adobe, and other times the OS crashes with a Kernel Panic and prompt a crash report to Apple.

Look at David’s post Oct 1st, how full is your start up drive.? Also you need to check your system resources, the available of free disk space, possibility of failing ram module etc.

My laptop itself has around 75g left out of 250g. I work with an external drive and try to keep my laptop as free as I can. The external had around 500g free out of 3TB. I am currently purging old backups, duplicates, and anything else to free up as much room as I can, we'll see if this helps!

UPDATE:

I have cleared an additional 50GB on my MacBook, as well as an additional 1.1TB on my external drive. After looking into the links provided I am confident that there is minimal "clutter" left. Things should be working..

But unfortunately diving back into Lightroom even just browsing the catalog is still enough to cause the app to crash.. Working from the develop module and trying to export any photos causes the fans to turn on high and soon after the OS goes Kernel Panic.

My latest fix attemp was to uninstall and reinstall Lightroom, as well as I tried moving back a version but no luck with that either.

Can you post your system information as lightroom classic reports it.

In Lightroom, click on Help, click on System Information, click on Copy.

Paste that in a reply.
