How do I create a HI RES vector and then graphic from a LOW RES jpg?

My son used a paint program to create a logo idea for his business.  The lines aren't reallystraight, and the resolution is low.  I'd like to stay true to his image, but create a vector and/or HI RES graphic he can use in various formats.  How do I "trace" his graphic but get perfect lines based on the information I have given regarding his original format?

I have Illustrator 5.5 I think, and PS CS6. ( I don't really know how to use Illustrator.)

Might be worth hiring a professional designer if you want a decent logo.

In my experience, you're better off creating a new vector in Illustrator.   You will probably have to trace paths manually because a poor quality raster image will not give you the best results.

Could you post the image? One of my freelance clients often sends me rough or jagged raster images that I recreate in Illustrator. Seeing what you have might give me a good idea as to how to proceed

You want the logo file to use vectors so if can be scaled to any size.   Photoshop will more or less treat a Placed Illustrator file as a vector smart object  there are actually no vectors in Photoshop for Photoshop does not actually support .Ai or .SVG files.   It imports these as a single pixels layer.  However as long as you keep the Logo as a Placed smart object  if you resize the layer or the document Photoshop will re-import the object file the resizing it using vector graphics.   If you create your logo using Photoshop and create it using  Photoshop Vector layers text and shape layers  you can save these layers in a PSD file.  When you want to place in you logo you could open your saved PSD logo and drag your Logo layers into the document you want to use it in.     In reality your logo file does not need to be a vector file  all you actually need is a large high quality image file.  Resizing large high quality images down  in size works very will where resize small high quality image up in size produces soft unacceptable images.  In any case you do not want to resize small text up or down in size resizing text does not work well via interpolation.

In other threads I has posted a Place Watermark Script "PlaceWatermark.jsx" that you can customize to place in you logo file that will resize it for  the current  image you are working on  Place Watermark Script Record that Script into an action if you want to batch adding tot logo,

Thanks, JJMack, for your response.  I'm not sure I totally understand what you're saying, but I don't think it will work unless I re-create it for him in PS, because just enlarging the one he gave me would show jagged edges.  That's what I found when I tried tracing it first in Illustrator, that trying to trace what is there won't work unless I can smooth out completely the lines and curves. Problem with that is that the points won't be points anymore because they turned curvy. I think I'm just going to have to tell him he needs to redo it in PS on a larger size file. Thanks, though!

You need a high quality Logo.  You asked  'How do I "trace" his graphic but get perfect lines based on the information I have given regarding his original format?'  Tracing you would not do for you stated his lines a are not smooth and straight.  If you want to use Photoshop you may want to try using the Pen tool to see if you can create paths that have smooth curved and straight lines for  the logo solid color and gradient areas. You would then be able to make Shape layers for the logo and size the logo to any size you need.

It may help if you posted the image in question, Illustrators Image Trace comes to mind, I'm not familiar with older versions of Illustrator so not sure it that's an option in 5.5

HI Ged,

Thanks so much for your response. I tried using trace, but because it has jagged edges from the low quality, it traced them jagged.  Trying to smooth out the edges didn't work...at least with my teeny understanding of how that program works...which I only opened today for the first time to do this. haha
