How do I disable "Photoshop transforms pixel and type layers proportionally by default"

Hey all,

Exited about some of the new features today, however I can't find the setting to switch back to not having my layers transform proportionally by default. This is such a major change in workflow I can't believe they'd implement it without having the ability to switch back (or maybe I'm just praying).

Thanks in advance.

They've updated the "What's New" page with instructions on how to revert to legacy functionality, under the "Transform proportionally by default" section:

Hi all. Affinity Photo lets you decide the proportion of input. So my work around this issue is to create a layer in Affinity, export it in a Photoshop accepted format, then import it as a layer into Photoshop. You can probably add this step with other programs too.

But it is crazy to have to work around this, (IMO very serious) limitation, Adobe has created - by using another program.

Anyone who thinks constrained proportions helps graphic artists/designers (or anyone) is not thinking.

Constrained proportion input (with the option to customise the shape) should be an option, but not the default.

There are all kinds of talented people who work at Adobe. Given only a very small fraction of people ever voice what many people are complaining about - Adobe should look at the number of complaints about this issue, and reconsider their decision to constrain import proportions.

Yeah, but no easy button or menu selection, or EVEN a setting in preferences. NO. WE have to create a dummy text file, and place it in our directory, like it's 1996. Seriously Adobe??? That's a fix? Really glad you forced us into paying every month and dealing with bogus un-asked for updates instead of getting a new CD package in the mail once a year and being left alone otherwise.

Oh, how I long for the 90s.

Does anyone know if this defect in Adobe Photoshop CC's handling of the resizing images has a fix? If so, I'd appreciate knowing what it is please.

I want to be able to control the size, shape and location of what I import in layers. Surely flexibility on whether there is to be a proportional or non-proportional import into a layer should be a given optional feature, that is easy to choose. It would be extremely boring (not to mention adversely affect creativity) - to have everything added to a layer constrained to a square shape etc, when the background image is not that shape. It seems like a step backwards.

At this rate I will have to use another program instead of Adobe to do this.

Does anyone have a recommended alternative that has allows an option to import in proportion or not?

F*** sakes Adobe. This has to be one of THE dumbest executions of a workflow. Has anyone figured out how to revert back to the legacy ("normal") way to scale, by holding shift and dragging?

This is unbelievable.  There are so many times where you would need to change the dimensions of a block to insert a photo, make it longer or more square, in a template.  What's wrong with Photoshop, when they make a change that can't be undone??!  This makes templates almost unworkable.

If would have been practical to set the new scale properties to all the creative suite apps and not just Photoshop.  Keep it the same on all platforms. This was a fix that wasn't needed.

Whilst this change does make sense as transforming proportionally is used far more often, i can't undo 20 years of pressing shift to do it.   Plus is very much the standard behaviour amongst all programs i use.

Its bonkers they are trying to force this change and we have to create a config file to undo it.

Add me to the "This is a horrible and completely unnecessary/counterproductive change to an industry standard for decades" list.

According to the page linked below, you can create a UserConfig.txt file and disable the default proportional transform. That said, I followed the instructions to the letter and it didn't work for me. YMMV.

LOL, those instructions weren't there this morning. I actually got it to work, THANK GOD, but getting to the settings folder was tricky (had to use cmd+shift+g in finder and paste the destination from the instructions), and I didn't initially covert my Rich Text to a True Text either.

But thank you, I might have missed those instructions if you didn't say anything.

Are you using SHIFT + Drag ?
You no longer need to use the shift key to force proportional.
Shift now works like free transform

CTRL + Drag works like shear
ALT + Drag is proportional but centered
ALT+ CTRL + Drag is rotate and stretch opposite corners

I couldn't find how to swap it back
