Repeated crashes Photoshop 20.0.4 Windows 10 64 bit

I would like to find out if there any others who are having the following problem. I have been using Photoshop for many years. The last version I had was CS6 which I purchased from the local bizbox store and installed on a Windows 7 machine. This software was registered with Adobe and they even answered several support questions and provided updates. When my Windows 7 machine crashed and died, I replace it with an HP Pavilion 590 (Memory: 10GB; Display Drivers: AMD Radeon RX Vega 11 Graphics; Disk: 2TB Seagate SATA disk drive; Windows 10). When I tried to renew the license key, I was told it was not valid. I disagree with this assessment, but decided to go ahead and join the Photoshop CC 2019 world anyway. I downloaded and installed the software and have not been able to use it reliably in 2 weeks after 5 hours with the support chat center. When they killed my machine by changing access to ntdll.dll and forced me to reinstall Windows and all of my software, I ran all the diagnostics as well as stress tested the computer with all of my applications EXCEPT Photoshop – no problems after 3 days. As soon as I tried to open photos and process in Photoshop, I got the WHEA error screen of death and the dump file error that pointed to the hal.dll as the cause of the crash. At this point I cannot work on more than 2 photos before the system crashes.

I have tried just about every suggestion on the chat boards and the suggestions from the Photoshop support group. As an aside, if anyone in the Adobe support group starts to change any of the Windows dll files … stop them immediately or face several days of rebuilding your computer.

Suggestions tried with no success thus far

Performance: Disable use graphics processor (Camera Raw, Bridge and Photoshop); Up memory usage to 6679; set cache levels to 6

Device Manager: Disable AMD graphics and enable generic driver

Check computer using chkdsk and sfc /scannow (found no problems)

Run in-depth scan of disks and memory (found no problems)

Can anyone tell me if they have encountered this problem and if they were able to resolve it? Or should I just go back to using CS6 and assume that Adobe does not know what to do about this issue?

Hi Allen,

Sorry to hear about Photoshop crashing, that should not be happening. Let's make this right.

As you've already tried several troubleshooting steps, could you please post the System Info text here? You can find it out by going to Help > System Info.

Also, could you please try creating a new user account on the operating system and let us know if you still experience the crash?

I have not finished looking at at your system info but see something I don't like the looks of.

OpenCL crashed on 5/21/2019 at 11:27:14 AM (Initializing OpenCL and OpenCL enabled features)

Macke sure you have the latest device diver from the manufacture installed for you display adapter.

You may it look new try disabling GPU in Photoshop performance and try installing old AMD device drivers.

Thanks for your reply! Downloaded latest drivers from AMD (19.5.1) - still crashes. Switched to downgraded drivers (all the way to Microsoft generic) - still crashes.

The problem is still most likely relate to your hardware and device drivers I search Google I though you might be dealing with 2001 Space Odyssey HAL. 2001 is past history Today HAL is different.

The HAL.DLL file on Windows is a library that is used by the Windows operating system to perform hardware abstraction, which is simply a fancy way of saying that it provides functions that handle the minutiae of dealing with all the various differences in hardware so that third-party software doesn't have to take it ...

Hi JJ,

Yep ... remember Hal as well. I have run every diagnostic tool available at max strength and they come back clean. I have several programs (sound editors, video editors, music system and (gasp) Office and they all run smoothly. So what is Photoshop doing that stresses the system? After ~10 hours with the Adobe techs running things, the decision is "Its a Microsoft problem." I am sure Microsoft will be overjoyed to hear that Adobe considers their Windows 10 system to be faulty. And if that is the case, the people out there with 10 should be screaming. I bought and installed this computer about three weeks ago so it should be up to date. Will be pushing Adobe and Microsoft for a bit ... then perhaps it is time to go back to a Mac. Thanks for weighing in on the problem

Thanks for sharing the system info, as suggested by JJMack, please try updating the graphics driver from the manufacture'rs website then restart the computer and let us know if it helps.

Does not show any difference with a different account - tried one with admin privs and one without. Still crashes after a couple of photos with the WHEA BSOD error
