You should be able to pinpoint the install failure by viewing the log file produced by the install.
Have a look in ...Program files\Common Files\Adobe\Installers for a file called "Adobe Photoshop CS6 Support 13.0.1 08-31-2012.log.gz"
This a zipped file but can be opened in Windows7. Plough through the file untill you see the error.
In my case there were 2 errors. The 1st was because I had ~digimarc folder and the 2nd was because I had ~Pixar file format. Simply undoing the ~ in both cases allowed for successful update

Generalizing, if you've done ANYTHING to Photoshop's installed files outside of adding things into the plug-ins subfolder (which is normally empty in Photoshop CS6) you've potentially shot yourself in the foot regarding applying updates in the future.
Mike, in your case (and just out of curiosity) what was the a reason you chose to disable those components?

Noel asked why I disabled the compoenents
Simple - I don't use either and so ~ so they would not load when opening Photoshop

Thanks for the follow-up, Mike. Now it's clear doing so has a downside.

Try downloading and updating manually starting at: http://www.adobe.com/downloads/updates/
And another thread with the same question, in case it shows a solution sooner than this one:

One has to wonder WHY you would have to uninstall and reinstall. Have you been mucking about changing the program files?

Not at all! Actually I've opened Photoshop CS6 only 4 or 5 times on this computer running Mountain Lion 10.8.1
Don't know why but uninstall and reinstall worked. Update did not work with manual download.

That's up to you. Your decision affects none of us, only you.
The update contains lots of bug fixes. Not all bugs have been fixed, but a bunch of them have:

Stability and SecurityWe work hard to ensure that Photoshop rarely crashes and we’ve raised the stability bar even higher with 13.0.1.However, if you do hit a crash, please let us know about it.Here are some guidelines on how to submit crash reports to Adobe:

Okay... After having to uninstall and reinstall PSCS6CC 13.1 in order to get it to work, AND not changing anything in PS this time so that I wouldn't have to go through that again, the same thing has happened (Error code: U44M1P6) with the 13.1.1 update (from Updater notification in Menubar). Something isn't right here, Adobe. Having to uninstall and reinstall just to get an update sucks.

Error codes from Application Manager are frequent and very annoying. The main place I'd like bugs fixed is with Application Manager. I just got the same error code. Last time was with Illustrator and ended up having to do the same uninstall/reinistall procedure. Had a similar bug when updating InDesign. Twice spent half a day with tech support whilst they trried to fix the issue and ended up following advice which corrupted my older CS5 installation of InDesign. Whilst CS6 applications have been great, including Photoshop, the Creative Cloud update system is buggy as hell. I have two colleagues at different businesses who have experienced similar problems. It really destroys all the productivity gains which Creative Cloud and the CS6 relaese might otherwise offer. As Noel Carboni said, one has to wonder why you have to uninstall and reinstall - not because users have done anything untoward but because Application Manager is utterly flawed. It all worked great in previous releases.

We have to realise that we are being used as bug finders for Adobe and they rely on us to report these bugs, if we did not they would not be able to release the software for years as they try to hunt the bugs out before release, which in itself makes sense. Rather have millions of helpers than a couple of dozen!
But, that said, between Adobe and OSX Mountain Lion, there are so many bugs, David Attenborough would have a field day with them!

Yes, that's very true. I had already reported this before coming on the Forum. It seems to me the relationship between Apple and Adobe is super important as so many people have businesses depending on Macs and Adobe products. The software update system is CRITICAL, right at the front line of Adobe's new Creative Cloud business model. It has to be right and it has to be a priority. Before posting here I read a number of threads where Adobe staff gave incorrect information and posted out-of-date links for manual software downloads, including for a newer (supposedly fixed) version of Application Manager which was not actually available for download. Poor show!
