missing tools

Hi,

I have tools missing in my toolbar and don't know how to get the icons there. I have tried every instruction I found online and nothing works. I have gone edit-toolbar and I see the window appear with all the available tools that says: Drag and drop tools or their groupings in the toolbar list view. What is the 'toolbar list view'? I tried dragging the missing tool out of that window into my toolbar on the left, but it doesn't work.

I have tried it through preferences-general-reset preferences on quit. Every tip I found in forums I have tried, but my toolbar keeps looking the same after I relaunch Photoshop.

When you drag and drop the tools do you drop them into the toolbar on the far left? That does not work. You have to drop them into the left side of the 'customise toolbar' window.

    Hope this helps!

    Thanks Mark,

That's exactly what I'm doing right now. Most of the time I find solutions,

but sometimes I get stumped with something unusual, like I was trying to

use one of my own photo's to swap a sky and the photo appeared small in PS

against a checkered nothing background. (I had sized it to make it large

enough to qualify for Shutterstock and change it's original dimensions) I

didn't know how to make it frame filling so I could use it as a regular

layer and use a mask to bring it behind the house I had shot. Stuff like

    that.

But I'm immensely appreciative of professionals like you helping novices

like me. It's a real boon to be able to learn from people who have

experimented and learned and are willing to share it freely.

    Very cool.

    Thanks!

Yes it's sort of a non-stop process! Always more to learn especially with Photoshop. But I also use a lot of other Adobe apps, and they are all constantly being changed and updated. And then of course new apps come out and some go away. Its a roller coaster of creativity! I am an Adobe Certified Instructor so I teach a lot of the apps....

Checkboard is showing Transparency since your sky image was not large enough. Most of the time scaling UP is no good... since it distorts the image. not so bad with clouds, but would not look so great with a persons face.

    Glad I could help.

    Hi there,

Im assuming that your tools are not missing. you would have to go to Edit>Toolbar and delete them for them to just go away.

I think it might be something to do with your workspace. Different workspaces save different panel or window layouts and the tools an also vary.    So try going to Window>Workspace>Essentials to make sure you are in the Essentials workspace. Then go to Window>Workspace>Reset Essentials. Hopefully that works and sets everything back to normal.

Another thing to note, almost EVERY single tool in the Tool Panel has MORE tools within it. Every tool with the tiny triangle at the bottom right corner of the tools means that there are more tools inside. You can click and hold on a tool to see the pop-out of other available tools.

and keep note* - After selecting the Marquee tool for example, you have an Elliptical Marquee and a Rectangular marquee. If you click and hold to select the Elliptical Marque, your tool panel will now change to show the Elliptical Marquee tool in the place of rectangular marquee. So the last tool you used will display and it may look like tools are missing.

    Hope this helps.

    Thanks Mark,

Very helpful. I didn't know you had to keep your mouse down on the little triangle to see the drop down menu. Slowly learning.

    Thank you!

Ahh.. you're so welcome. Glad it all worked out.

So happy to read your response. You can click and hold anywhere on the tool icon .. you don't have to click that tiny triangle thankfully!

Another useful tips for Photoshop... put everything on it's own layer... and use adjustment layers.

    Happy Photoshopping!

P.S. are you able to mrk the answer as correct? Seems the wrong message was marked as "correct". Thanks

    Hoi Marja,

Try editing your toolbar and restoring it to its default configuration.
