A Tabloid PDF created in InDesign is read as US Letter by the Printer Driver

Hi!

I'm exporting an 11" x 17" document from InDesign as a PDF. The PDF says it is 11" x 17" when I hover over the bottom left-hand corner, but when I open it to print, the driver sees it as 8.5" x 11".

Does anyone know why this might be happening, and what I can do to fix it?

Thanks!

Iain

Is 8.5x11" paper the default paper loaded in that printer (and chosen by that driver)? If you can switch to the larger paper and it works, it makes me wonder if the driver just (philosophically) assumes that every document will be going to 8.5x11" unless told otherwise, and isn't smart enough to peek into the file to make that decision.

Can you change the printer driver to print at 11x17" paper? It sounds like it's trying to "shrink to fit" to an 8.5x11" paper size.

Hi, bucksommerkamp! Thanks for the reply!

Yes, I can change the printer driver to print at 11x17" paper, so I can at least get the job done.

I was more wondering "philosophically" what I might be doing wrong to cause this in the first place 🙂

That makes sense! Thanks, bucksommerkamp! I was just confused because I've never encountered this problem before, and my client was telling me I'd supplied the document at the wrong size, when so far as I could tell, I hadn't! But some predisposition on the part of the driver (and it not checking in the file itself) would explain it. Thanks again!
