Acrobat 9 and Reader for pdf previewer in Outlook 2016 conflict

I’m experiencing a conflict between my Adobe 9 Standard that I use to open pdfs and Adobe Reader which I use only in Outlook  to preview pdfs. When I associate pdf with Reader in default programs, I can' open Acrobat.  And when I use Acrobat without installing Reader, I can't use previewer.  In Windows 7, I could fix this with the association to Acrobat.   But the fix doesn't work with Windows 10, Outlook 2016.  Anyone have a fix for this?

There could be many reasons for it working, but since Adobe no longer supported it, they said it was not supported. Any change to Windows could have caused your copy to fail. I would expect your copy of Adobe Reader 9 to fail at some time in the future.

Acrobat 9 is quite old and no longer supported or being updated by Adobe. If you a look at Compatible web browsers and PDFMaker applications | Older versions of Acrobat and Reader you will see that MS Office 2016 and Outlook 2016 are not supported by Acrobat 9.

Compatible web browsers and PDFMaker applications shows that only Adobe Reader DC, Acrobat DC, and Acrobat 2017 support MS Office 2007 and Outlook 2007 and newer versions. Adobe Reader 2017 is a free download, so there should be no reason not to install it.

Thank you for the info about supported applications.  Interesting, though, that the doc says Acrobat 9 is also not supported for Outlook 2010 64 bit.  Well, I was able to both preview with Reader and open with Acrobat 9 in Outlook 2010 64 bit running Windows 7 for many years with no issue.  And now, with my new laptop, in 2016 I can also run both programs.  The problem is just that I can't run them together as I could before.
