I figured it out. Looks like a rogue font that was activated in Font Explorer Pro X (6.0.5). Now it opens fine.

Seems I have been having te same problem. What did you do to solve it?

Did you delete the rogue font (was it a specific one?) or did you have to

covert these text to outlines?

It's been so long I can't remember the name of the font. I use the font manager program Font Explorer Pro X and it highlights red any fonts that have issues. I just removed any fonts that had the red highlight and Distiller opened fine. When you start Distiller it looks like it preloads all your active fonts. Maybe try deactivating any recent fonts you've added.
