Acrobat Pro 2017 repair fail: Error 1901 Error Attempting to Read from Source Installation Database

Problem started, when my Windows 10 installation of Acrobat Pro 2017 refused to create a PDF from an MS Word (.docx) file.

I got the error message:

"Unable to find "Adobe PDF" resource file. Do you want to run the installer in repair mode?"

Clicked "Yes",

The repair process stalls with this error message:

"Error 1901 Error Attempting to Read from Source Installation Database: C:\WINDOWS\Installer\406d6.msp"

Tried downloading new installation file from Amazon.com software library, and chose 'Repair" option.  I have an "Adobe Acrobat Pro 2017 Student and Teacher Edition Windows" version, only installed once (on present PC). The repair process ends with same error message: "Error 1901 Error Attempting to Read from Source Installation Database: C:\WINDOWS\Installer\406d6.msp"

I am still capable of creating pdfs from docx files by choosing ""Save as Adobe PDF" in the MS Word Application. I am hesitant to complete uninstall Adobe Acrobat, since I need the fuctionality on a daily basis (I am a teacher), and the installation process does not appear to work.
